Alexander Beznes, LCSW is a licensed psychotherapist based in New York City with over a decade of experience, specializing in depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, identity development, and relationship difficulties. He sees adult clients for in-person individual therapy and couples counseling in his Flatiron office and offers remote sessions for residents of New York and New Jersey. His practice is open to anyone seeking support, with particular experience working with men and creatives, as well as those navigating challenges related to identity, self-expression, or masculinity.
His approach is relational and client-centered, focused on understanding each person’s unique perspective while fostering insight into coping patterns, relational dynamics, and sources of self-criticism or shame. He provides structure, including monthly themes to guide exploration and weekly prompts for reflection, and integrates evidence-based methods such as EMDR, mindfulness, and somatic/experiential techniques to help clients regulate emotions, access resilience, and strengthen their sense of agency. Whether working individually or with couples, Alexander emphasizes building self-connection, healthy coping strategies, and communication skills, while providing a supportive, nonjudgmental space to explore unexpressed emotions and deepen connection with oneself and others.
Alexander received his MSW from New York University’s Silver School of Social Work and continues to engage in diverse post-graduate training, enriching his practice across multiple approaches. His background in human services began during his undergraduate studies, volunteering with local institutions to gain real-world experience, and he continues to honor social work values by offering pro bono services to Ukrainian refugees, including initiatives supporting arts scholarships for those struggling with isolation.
Years of Experience: 12 years
Depression - Depression can gradually take hold and interrupt daily life. It can pull you away from relationships and deepen isolation. It can also create distance from your own feelings and needs, replacing curiosity with cynicism and harsh self-judgment. In our work, we identify where things have stalled and create clear, manageable steps to rebuild momentum. The focus is on restoring balance, strengthening self-connection, and reconnecting with what feels meaningful.
Anxiety - Anxiety can feel constant and exhausting, appearing as worry, racing thoughts, or tension in the body. I teach grounding and self-soothing skills to help regulate the nervous system and make daily life more manageable. I also provide a nonjudgmental space to explore obsessive thoughts and the emotions beneath them. The goal is to loosen anxiety’s grip, strengthen agency, and reconnect you with your own voice and needs.
Addiction - Addiction can take many forms, including substance use, sexual behaviors, internet or gambling, and shopping. At their core, these behaviors are compulsive attempts to fill an internal void. What once offered relief can begin to erode life and relationships, often fueling shame. I use a harm reduction approach and evidence-based practices like Motivational Interviewing, offering compassionate support to foster autonomy and control while helping clients develop healthy coping skills and outlets.
Trauma - Trauma can affect anyone, leaving the nervous system dysregulated and daily life fragmented. I provide grounding and support to restore balance, access resilience, and process difficult experiences. Using evidence-based approaches like EMDR, along with somatic and experiential techniques, we work to integrate unmetabolized trauma, increase bodily and emotional awareness, and give voice to unexpressed feelings.
Relationships - Relationships are co-constructed, shaped by the ways we see ourselves and the roles we have taken over time. Many maladaptive patterns are rooted in family dynamics and early experiences. I help clients uncover these hidden dynamics, examine their communication styles, and build insight into how patterns affect connection with others. The work focuses on strengthening skills to form and sustain meaningful relationships, especially for those facing isolation or alienation.
Identity development - Identity development is about understanding and becoming who you are. I help clients reconnect with themselves when they feel lost or without direction, fostering authentic lives through creative expression and reducing shame and self-criticism. We work to identify patterns of compensation, build confidence in personal choices, and strengthen the ability to show up as your genuine self, creating more ease and alignment in daily life.
If you are impacted by the war in Ukraine and need support, I am offering pro bono services.
