Professional statement

Ariel VanDoren is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Washington, DC, who specializes in grief, trauma, family issues, and anxiety/depression. Many of Ariel’s clients find that past events have begun to shadow their present—impacting their decision-making, relationships, or work-life balance. She also supports those facing "frozen" moments during major life transitions, such as losing a partner, navigating career shifts, or stepping into parenthood.

A Holistic & Parts-Based Approach

Ariel’s practice is rooted in Relational theories and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), enhanced by Internal Family Systems (IFS). She helps clients identify and process the different "parts" of themselves—such as those that hold onto past trauma or those that use perfectionism to cope—to foster internal healing. She helps clients identify and process the different "parts" of their internal world—such as the parts that carry old wounds or those that use anxiety to protect them. By creating a clear narrative for past events, Ariel helps clients connect their history to their present-day experiences with newfound self-compassion.

Growth-Oriented Support

Depending on your unique needs, Ariel integrates mindfulness practices to help you ground yourself in the moment, alongside clinical assessments to track your progress. She deeply believes that every individual possesses the capacity for profound growth. Her goal is to provide a collaborative space where you can process your experiences and reach your full potential.

Message to clients

The decision to begin therapy can be exciting, humbling, and empowering – all at the same time. I’m here to help you move through your challenges and areas of struggle as we work together toward inner healing and emotional strength. My goal is to empower you to take charge of your life by creating a narrative that truly reflects your authentic self.

In our work together, I strive to provide a safe, compassionate space where every part of you is welcome. Especially at the start of therapy, it can feel daunting to face "internal truths" or behaviors you might feel frustrated by. Instead of viewing these as weaknesses, we will look at them through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS)—understanding how different parts of you have stepped up to protect you, and how we can help them find a new, healthier balance. I cultivate an environment of honest communication and mutual respect as we progress toward positive change.

I truly believe in a holistic approach that integrates your past experiences into the present for full-circle healing. Rather than suppressing difficult thoughts or emotions, we will work on strategies to understand and "externalize" these internal parts with vulnerability. Together, we’ll move past self-limiting patterns and personal triggers, helping you reach a place of powerful insight and self-awareness.
