Professional statement

Bryan Batista-Thomas, LCSW is a psychoanalytically trained clinician in private practice in Midtown Manhattan. He works with adults who are interested in in-depth, exploratory psychotherapy and who are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and their inner lives.

Many people who come to see Bryan are thoughtful and capable in their external lives, yet experience persistent inner conflict, emotional emptiness, or dissatisfaction that has not shifted through prior therapy. His work often involves exploring questions of identity, intimacy, sexuality, creativity, and the ways early experience continues to shape present-day relationships and self-experience.

Bryan’s approach is grounded in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and emphasizes careful attention to emotional experience, memory, and unconscious process. Treatment is open-ended and unfolds over time, rather than focusing on quick solutions or symptom management.

Bryan received his Master of Social Work from New York University and completed postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute and the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR). He also holds a Master of Arts in Performance Studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Bryan maintains a private, out-of-network practice. He sees patients in person in Midtown Manhattan and offers virtual sessions to adults in New York State, Massachusetts, Georgia, and Kentucky.

Message to clients

I typically work with adults who have had multiple prior treatments and continue to feel dissatisfied or constrained in their lives. Many people who come to see me describe a diffuse or unstable sense of self, a feeling of inner emptiness, or difficulty putting their experience into words. My work attends closely to how early relationships, emotional experience, and unconscious patterns shape a person’s sense of who they are and how they relate to others. I am particularly attentive to questions of power, difference, and cultural context, and to how these factors become woven into one’s inner life.

Through an open-ended, psychoanalytic process, we work toward developing a more coherent and livable sense of self, including the capacity to recognize and articulate one’s own emotional language in relation to others.
