Professional statement

Catriona Schmidt is a licensed therapist and founder of Schmidt Counseling Services, where she provides compassionate, evidence-based therapy for adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, and perinatal mental health concerns. She has advanced training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders through Postpartum Support International and specializes in supporting individuals during pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, infertility, pregnancy loss, and the transition into parenthood.

Catriona earned her graduate degree in counseling from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland and has worked across clinical settings in both Indiana and Rhode Island, gaining experience supporting diverse client populations in outpatient and community-based mental health environments.

Her therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in creating a safe, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel genuinely supported and understood. Her work is informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and insight-oriented approaches. She helps clients identify unhelpful thought patterns, develop effective coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen communication and interpersonal skills. She integrates practical, evidence-based tools with deeper self-exploration to support lasting emotional growth and resilience.

Clients often describe her as calming, thoughtful, and approachable. She is passionate about helping people gain clarity, build confidence, and create meaningful change during difficult or transitional periods of life.

She offers both in-person therapy in Providence and telehealth services for clients located in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Indiana.

Message to clients

In counseling with me, you can expect a collaborative and supportive space where we work together to better understand what you are experiencing and what you would like to change. Sessions are guided by your goals and are both structured and flexible, allowing us to focus on what feels most important each week. My role is to help you gain clarity around patterns, emotions, and experiences, while also supporting you in building practical tools for everyday life.

Therapy is an active process, and you can expect to be engaged in reflection both during and between sessions. We may explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, identify unhelpful patterns, and practice new ways of responding to stress and challenges.

You are encouraged to show up exactly as you are—whether you feel clear, uncertain, overwhelmed, or somewhere in between. There is no “right way” to come to therapy. Over time, we will move at a pace that feels manageable while working toward meaningful and sustainable change that aligns with your values and goals.
