Professional statement

Dr. Christopher Michael is a licensed psychologist in Claremont, CA. He works with people who put others too far ahead of themselves. Often, they struggle with: difficult and conflictual relationships, managing interpersonal boundaries, social anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and under-assertiveness. He is especially interested in helping highly sensitive persons (HSPs), creative types, and people in helping professions or activities.

As an overvirew, Dr. Michael is trained in psychoanalytic / psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and existential approaches to therapy and counseling. That means that he is interested in four things:

1. Cultivating a connected, grounded experience of being human (and safe) together

2. Helping you catch sight of and understand hidden or ignored, meaningful thoughts, feelings, motives, and actions

3. Understanding how your internal and external behavior started, why / how it is not working for you now, and how it can work better for you, and

4. Seeing how #2 and #3 relate to each other, and how they sometimes manifest right in the living therapy relationship.

Dr. Michael stays centered by keeping only one agenda in therapy: to truly understand you in a supportive and emotionally insightful way. That way, your self-understanding expands and deepens. Although it's sometimes in a surprising way, that expansion gives you more agency and freedom than you thought possible—even when the world is harsh.

Dr. Michael received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tulsa in 2006, after completing an internship at Patton State Hospital. He has been in supervised or independent clinical practice since 2005, and California-licensed since 2008. When not working, you can find him at home enjoying cooking, his cats, spending time with family, and watching funny commentary shows or music reaction videos.

Message to clients

Here, I will personally reemphasize my only desire in sessions: to truly and sensitively *understand you*, in context. When that is working, all other agendas fall away, leaving a protected space with the right mix of nourishment, support, and growth-encouragement to meet your goals. For therapy to work, you need to trust my good will, insight, and expertise, and learn to trust yourself in new ways. I admire that, and helping you develop and expand trust is job one for me.

I am so glad you have decided to seek out real therapy. Only another human can truly know what it is like to be a self-aware, living being with needs, wants, and anxieties. I have lived the process of gaining freedom through supported acceptance and adaptation. I help you persist, understand, accept, and adapt, even when realities are unfair or uncertain. In the protected space of our sessions, I use my best judgment and compassion to deliver new insights and ideas, as well as methods to implement those insights and ideas.

In all this, you will not be alone. You will find my supportive presence, as well as a 'second mind' gently but firmly helping you process and plan. I look forward to taking these most important steps with you!

Specialties

People-Pleasing, Self-Worth, Boundaries - You want to live more on your terms, feel better about your 'self', and be connected to others while not sacrificing your desires and needs. This area covers people-pleasing, codependency, and 'toxic' or high-conflict relationships, though I am not a domestic violence specialist.

Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP) - You think and feel deeply, are easily impacted by beauty and emotion, and crave in-depth relating, but need alone time to recharge. That can sometimes leave you feeling isolated or misunderstood. I specialize in understanding HSPs and helping them accept themselves and live well.

Helping Professionals, Creatives - Often, people who come to me for help are working to reduce suffering and bring beauty and meaning into the world. Sometimes that leaves them feeling unappreciated, overwhelmed, or exhausted in today's fast-paced world.

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder).

Self-esteem - Cultivating self-compassion, assertiveness, and confidence; developing ways to reduce suffering, anxiety, social withdrawal, and self-neglect

Depression - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life
