Professional statement

Dr. David Richard is a seasoned clinical psychologist with over thirty years of experience and strong credentials. He currently serves at Western State Hospital and is the incoming Founding Director of the Master’s in Clinical Psychology program at Radford University. A graduate of Harvard and the University of Hawaii, Dr. Richard blends academic prestige with clinical experience. His background spans from outpatients with anxiety and depression to treating seriously mentally ill inpatient populations, ensuring he has the skills to tackle complex, seemingly intractable issues.

His practice is specifically tailored for high-functioning professionals who prioritize privacy and are ready to address old problems in new ways. Utilizing a goal-oriented integration of cognitive-behavioral and existential approaches, Dr. Richard emphasizes cognitive restructuring to dismantle persistent patterns of anxiety, shame, and worry. Whether navigating marital discord, work issues, complex trauma, or grief, his style is highly interactive and collaborative. His warm, mentoring approach ensures you complements goal-directedness to ensure that you are taking the right steps toward being the authentic person you want to be.

Dr. Richard offers a premium, confidential space for those investing in long-term mental health. He maintains a focused roster to ensure high-end care, specializing in complex PTSD, childhood trauma, and adjustment disorders. While the practice prefers private pay to maximize discretion, documentation is provided for out-of-network insurance claims.

Client Focus: Non-acute adults, with an emphasis on men’s issues and high-functioning professionals. Primary Treatments: Cognitive Therapy, Written Exposure, Mindfulness, and Existential approaches focused on authenticity and happiness. Ideal Match: Clients with strong verbal skills who want more than supportive therapy. Successful clients usually have a willingness to confront fears and their own obstacles in order to develop their authentic selves.

WHAT THERAPY LOOKS LIKE

First, schedule a meet-and-greet session to see if Dr. Richard is right for you. If you would like to proceed, then schedule an intake session. Dr. Richard will conduct a thorough semi-structured interview with you that is designed to identify salient cognitive and behavioral problems, what may be causing them, and the consequences of those problems. In addition, you will discuss the effect of those problems on your ability to achieve happiness and lead the life you would like to live. Therapy then proceeds in 50-minute sessions and is designed for 10-12 sessions with the option to continue or to utilize periodic booster sessions in the future.

At all points in the process, you and Dr. Richard will work as a team to address the issues you want to address. You are the expert in knowing yourself. Dr. Richard’s goal is to help you rethink and reconceptualize problems as opportunities to learn about yourself and achieve authenticity.

Please note, the therapy that Dr. Richard employs is empirically-supported and blends cognitive, behavioral, and existential approaches. Individuals looking for an exclusively supportive therapeutic approach might feel uncomfortable with his style since it emphasizes problem-solving, constructive feedback, and goal attainment. It is designed to make rapid progress by directly confronting those fears, beliefs, and thinking styles that compromise mental health.
