Professional statement

Dr. Bines works primarily with Black adults and others from marginalized communities who are navigating the weight of living in systems that were not designed with them in mind. His clients often come in carrying racialized stress, anxiety, depression, and questions about identity alongside the everyday pressures of relationships, career transitions, family dynamics, and figuring out who they are and want to become. He has a particular interest in working with men, and in helping people develop self-compassion and confidence as tools for sustainable change.

His therapeutic approach is relational and integrative, rooted in the conviction that a person’s inner life cannot be understood apart from the cultural, social, and systemic forces surrounding them. Dr. Bines draws on Interpersonal Process Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and other evidence-informed frameworks. Not as a fixed protocol, but as a flexible set of tools he tailors to each client’s needs. The work focuses on building genuine insight into patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior, understanding where those patterns come from, and creating real openings for change.

Dr. Bines holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology and an MS in Counseling, Family, and Human Services from the University of Oregon, and a BA in Sociology from California State University, Fullerton. He completed his predoctoral internship and postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley’s Counseling and Psychological Services, and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Counseling at San Francisco State University. His academic and clinical work are mutually informed by the same commitments that shape his scholarship show up in how he sits with clients.

Message to clients

I work best with people who are ready to do more than manage symptoms, who want to understand themselves more deeply and make changes that actually last. That doesn’t mean you need to have everything figured out before we start. It means coming in with some openness to the process, even when it gets uncomfortable. Therapy works when we’re both invested in it, and I bring my full attention and care to every session.

Before we begin, it’s worth knowing that I take the relationship seriously. I’m not a blank slate, and I don’t think neutrality serves you. I show up as a real person, engaged, direct, and genuinely committed to your growth. You should expect me to notice patterns, ask honest questions, and occasionally push back. Not to challenge you for its own sake, but because I believe you’re capable of more than you may be giving yourself credit for.

My hope for everyone I work with is that they leave therapy with a clearer sense of who they are, what they need, and how to move through the world with more intention and less suffering. You deserve support that sees all of you, not just your presenting problem, but your history, your culture, your strengths, and your full humanity. That’s what I’m here to offer.

Therapist's note

We currently only accept credit cards and some HSA for payment. We do not accept insurance.

We also accept Loveland Theapy Vouchers and Mental Health Fund (MHF) for QTBIPOC Vouchers.

We don’t work directly with insurance companies, but you may still be able to use your insurance to cover some of the cost of our services. This depends on whether you have out-of-network benefits, which means your insurance will cover part of the cost of seeing a provider who is not in their network.

To make things easier for you, we use a payment app (Thrizer) that does all the paperwork and billing for you.

Either:

Use Thrizer to pay the full fee, and wait to receive reimbursement for your covered benefit for free.

Or pay 5% convenience fee and only pay your co-insurance. Thrizer will bill your insurance for the rest (i.e., if you have 80% coverage, then you pay 20% of your session fee and we bill your insurance company for the other 80%).
