Professional statement

Many adults come to therapy feeling exhausted from carrying so much on their own. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, trauma, relationship challenges, or a sense of being stuck in patterns they can't seem to change. Dr. Eli Hilman, works with adults and couples who want not only relief from these struggles, but also a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships. Many of his clients are thoughtful, hard-working professionals who spend much of their time caring for others, meeting high expectations, and balancing the demands of work, family, and everyday life. He also has advanced training and experience working with personality-related difficulties, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), helping clients better understand longstanding emotional and relationship patterns with compassion and without judgment. Eli strives to provide a supportive, collaborative environment where clients can slow down, make sense of their experiences, and create meaningful, lasting change.

Eli’s approach is relational, insight-oriented, and collaborative, with an emphasis on both deeper emotional understanding and practical change. He integrates psychodynamic psychotherapy and Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other evidence-based modalities to tailor treatment to each client’s needs.

Eli earned his Master of Social Work in 2011 and his Doctor of Social Work in 2026. He has worked in outpatient mental health settings and private practice and has completed advanced postgraduate training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute, Mentalization-Based Treatment through McLean Hospital, couples training at Gottman Institute, and trauma-focused treatment. His training supports an integrative approach that adapts to each client while maintaining a consistent focus on emotional awareness, relationship functioning, and long-term change.

Dr. Hilman provides psychotherapy in Forked River, New Jersey, as well as telehealth therapy for clients throughout New Jersey.
