Professional statement

Jeffrey Zeth is an experiential psychotherapist in Brooklyn, NY. He works primarily with young adults (age 18--40) but also with anyone going through personal life transitions -- the beginning or end of relationships, jobs, and careers; a first child, or a loss in the family. He works in the here-and-now, using a gestalt approach, but works cognitively as well.

After receiving his MSW in 1992, Jeff worked in addiction treatment, and went on to a career in managed care that spanned over two decades. He left the corporate world in 2023 to pursue a lifelong interest in private practice. Along the way, he has worked in community mental health settings, addiction treatment centers, and small private practice offices, with a variety of clients facing many different kinds of challenges. He has written and published in the field of addiction treatment, and is co-chair of the Addictions Committee for the Metropolitan New York chapter of the New York State Society for Clinical Social Work (NYSSCSW). His gestalt training, from 2019 - 2022, was a lengthy exposure to that form of therapy, involving recorded sessions that were reviewed with his supervisor, as well as intensive one-on-one practicum work in front of small groups of peers. His later interest in trauma was a development of his work in generalist mental health settings, where clients with trauma histories had come seeking help for other reasons. Jeff's current interest in trauma is with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), for which he is currently in training.

Jeff is licensed in New York and lives in Brooklyn. At this time, he is only available online for New York State residents.

Message to clients

Are you facing a life transition and uncertain about what to do? Divorce, loss, retirement, a first child, recovery from addiction, or a new living environment can feel very complicated and scary, with many areas of life intertwined and with a wild variety of emotions, thoughts, and sensations. You might be asking, "Where should I start?" The answer I have for that question is to begin with what you're feeling right now. Notice sensations, thoughts, emotions, and where they might be residing in your body. The important things will come to light in due course. If we follow the thread of sensation together honestly and carefully, we might wind up in some unexpected places. Are you ready?

For me, the journey to becoming more of who you are contains three stages: 1) from not-knowing to knowing, 2) from knowing to feeling, and 3) from feeling to living. Self-knowledge is relatively simple. It's possible you already know a lot about yourself, whether through previous experiences in therapy, 12-step programs, or other self-development work. But in order to really feel that truth -- to feel it in your body and in your heart -- something much deeper is required. Finally, the road from feeling to living is a lifelong road. It is an ongoing process. These stages don't follow a strictly linear order. But, over time, we reach mastery over certain parts of the process. This is what I want for all my clients.
