For most children, beginning and attending school is an eagerly-embraced opportunity to "spread their wings" and engage in the process of developing their intellectual, academic, and social-emotional capacities through formal instruction by their teachers, collaborative engagement with classmates, self-guided interests, and extracurricular activities with peers. However, some school-age children experience unexpected cognitive and emotional challenges that can undermine their ability to effectively engage in instruction or in their interactions with others, which threaten to undermine their intellectual development, relationships with adults and peers, and their self-esteem.

In many cases, a child's difficulties are readily identified and addressed by teachers, pediatricians, and other professionals well-versed in child development and education. In some instances, however, children present with interrelated and sometimes confusing arrays of scholastic and social-emotional difficulties that warrant a more in-depth examination of their strengths and weaknesses. Psychological and neuropsychological assessments, which involve obtaining information from teachers and parents, interviews, and the administration of various non-invasive tests, can be of great assistance in providing a "road map" for those working with your child, and identifying the types of educational, psychotherapeutic, or medical interventions that are most likely to be effective in optimizing your child's strengths and addressing their needs.
