Professional statement

Dr. Karl Southgate is a licensed clinical psychologist. He received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and English from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Throughout his training and work experience, Karl worked with clients in inpatient, college counseling, and group practice settings. His clinical specializations include working with adults who struggle with depression, work-related stress, relational discord, trauma histories, and anxiety. He also has extensive experience working with children and adolescents.

Karl’s approach to clinical work is characterized by a sensitivity to each individual’s unique needs and potentials. He believes that people often experience immense change when they process difficult emotions, explore past experiences, and develop meaningful goals for themselves. In nearly ten years as a licensed mental health professional, he has found that the safety of the therapeutic relationship can facilitate change and help individuals to live life with a greater sense of meaning and purpose. To aid clients in making choices that feel authentic and intentional, Karl helps them to identify and disentangle themselves from systems and relationships that have deprived them of their agency.

Karl adopts a relational, experiential, insight-oriented approach in his clinical work. He believes that careful attention to past experiences and to the here-and-now process of therapy provides a powerful means of accessing feelings, identifying psychological conflicts, and discovering hindrances to personal growth. At the same time, he finds it essential to help clients develop coping skills to manage daily challenges. Karl also works with clients to develop goals that align with their personal strengths and values.

When not in the virtual office, Karl spends much of his time writing and recording music, reading fantasy novels and comics, and doting on his cats Foggy and Ripley.

Message to clients

"It wasn't a big deal, I don't know why I was so anxious about it."

I hear some version of this sentiment nearly every day in my clinical work, and I sometimes frame my own struggles in such a manner. Perhaps the most important insight I've developed over the course of my career as a psychologist is that every experience is complex. Even seemingly mundane or trivial moments in the day represent the accumulation of an individual's history up to that time; every thought and feeling exists within a matrix of cultural, interpersonal, and biological realities. It can be unbelievably difficult to acknowledge and appreciate the complexity of one's experiences in real time. When experiences remain unarticulated, they are often dismissed, forgotten, or judged, all of which can result in painful feelings that don't make sense.

Therapy provides a unique setting in which a person has the time and space to give their experiences--painful, joyous, or boring--the attention they deserve. Feelings and thoughts that compete for attention throughout the day take on a new reality when they have been spoken, and people often experience clarity and relief when they have put their experiences into words.

As a therapist, I seek to help clients develop clarity, agency, and authenticity by providing a space in which their experiences can be discussed in a way that feels safe and meaningful.
