Professional statement

Katrina Flesvig is a Counselor in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago who works with adults of all ages. Many of her clients seek support for trauma histories, life transitions, anxiety, and relationship challenges. She has advanced training in treating Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and Panic Disorder.

Katrina is trained in advanced treatment approaches including EMDR, IFS, and DBT. Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a gentle, compassionate model that helps clients understand their internal “parts,” build self-leadership, and develop greater calm, confidence, and clarity. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps the brain reprocess overwhelming or traumatic memories so they feel less intense and disruptive, using bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or tapping. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) provides practical skills for emotion regulation, mindfulness, relationship effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

These approaches support clients in understanding themselves more deeply, feeling more grounded, and responding to life’s challenges with increased steadiness and self-compassion. Clients often experience fewer triggers, improved emotional regulation, and greater internal balance as they process difficult experiences at a pace that feels safe.

In sessions, Katrina incorporates skills such as guided imagery, breathwork, grounding exercises, distress tolerance strategies, mindfulness, and psycho-education. Her style is non-judgmental, respectful, and collaborative. When clients begin therapy, she focuses on understanding their history, building safety, and setting goals together.

Katrina received her MA from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and has worked for 17 years at a local nonprofit Community Mental Health Center in both clinical and leadership roles. Outside of private practice, she enjoys spending time with family and friends and finding quiet moments for self-care. Her practice is fully Telehealth.

Message to clients

Before we begin working together, I want you to know that therapy with me is a space where you don’t have to have everything figured out or present yourself in any particular way. My hope is that you come exactly as you are, with whatever feelings, questions, or uncertainties you’re carrying. I will always move at a pace that feels safe for you, and we will make decisions together about what feels helpful. You’ll never be pushed into anything before you’re ready. My goal is for you to feel grounded, supported, and understood as you learn more about yourself and begin the work of healing. I believe therapy can be a place where you rediscover your strengths, build new skills, and feel more connected to who you truly are. I’m honored to walk alongside you as we begin this process together.
