Professional statement

Margo Porter, MSW, LICSW is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Needham, Massachusetts. She works with parents who are feeling overwhelmed, unsure or stuck in patterns that aren't working for the family. Margo brings active, collaborative, and conversational style to therapy and has experience across community mental health, school-based programs, and private practice.

A central focus of Margo's work is parent coaching, where she helps parents clarify their goals, reduce stress, and develop practical evidence-based strategies that lead to meaningful change at home. She is highly attuned to child development and uses this understanding to help parents set realistic expectations, strengthen communication, and respond more effectively to anxiety and behavioral challenges.

Margo takes an integrative approach, drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems, psychodynamic therapy and interpersonal therapy (IPT). She is trained in SPACE (Supporting Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) a parent-based treatment that helps caregivers support children with anxiety by changing their own responses- without requiring the child to attend sessions.

Margo partners with parents to create individualized plans that support both parental confidence and healthy family functioning.

Message to clients

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure of yourself as a parent, or stuck in patterns that just aren’t working for your family, I want you to know you’re not alone. I work closely with parents who are right where you are — caring deeply about their kids, but feeling stressed, frustrated, or unsure of what to try next.

When we meet, my style is active, collaborative, and conversational. This isn’t about me lecturing or handing you a script — it’s about us thinking together. I bring experience from community mental health, school-based programs, and private practice, which helps me understand the different pressures families are juggling every day.

A big part of my work is parent coaching. Together, we’ll clarify what matters most to you, identify what’s getting in the way, and create practical, evidence-based strategies that actually fit your family. My goal is to help you reduce stress and feel more confident in your parenting decisions — and to see meaningful change at home.

I’m deeply attuned to child development, and I use that lens to help you set realistic expectations, strengthen communication, and respond more effectively to anxiety or behavioral challenges. Often, small shifts in how you respond can make a big difference in how things unfold.

Above all, I see our work as a partnership. We’ll create a plan tailored specifically to your family — one that strengthens your confidence as a parent and supports healthier, more connected family functioning.
