Professional statement

Hi, I’m Melanie Van Orden, and I’m a psychotherapist and professional life coach in New York City. I offer trauma-informed, somatic-based therapy for clients dealing with C-PTSD, anxiety, depression, and many other mental health conditions. I particularly specialize in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF), and ketamine-assisted therapy (KAP). I am licensed for therapy in New York State only, but I offer life coaching, trauma recovery coaching, and psychedelic integration coaching to clients worldwide.

I specialize in working with people who are creative and sensitive, but often struggle with issues surrounding self-worth and meeting their own needs. These individuals frequently prioritize being liked, accepted, and approved of, which can hinder their ability to express their true selves and pursue their genuine desires. Additionally, they tend to be overly critical of themselves, burdened by feelings of shame, blame, and guilt.

The clients I work with are also often facing professional transitions from unfulfilling careers, navigating romantic relationship issues (such as finding new love or leaving unhealthy partnerships), or dealing with grief and loss. I also address deeply personal issues, including questioning the belief systems they were raised with, leaving systems of coercive control or cults, or leaving high-demand religious groups (especially Mormonism/LDS/The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). I also have expertise in working with queer clients regarding LGBTQIA+ concerns, helping individuals affected by narcissistic abuse, and assisting my clients in their recovery from love addiction and/or sex addiction.

If any of this resonates with you, I encourage you to reach out and schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation to see if we're a good fit to embark on this transformative journey together.

Message to clients

It takes great courage to reach out for help. I hope that you will reach out to see if we are a good fit to work together.

I work particularly well with women, creatives, entrepreneurs, and LGBTQIA+ people. I utilize somatic, relational, mindfulness-based, trauma-informed and psychodynamic modalities in my work with clients, as well as an optional psychedelic-assisted therapy utilizing ketamine rapidly-dissolving tablets (prescribed by a medical provider). I also specialize in attachment-based therapy.

A particular area of focus in my practice is religious trauma recovery, recovery from leaving cults, and spiritual/existential exploration. This includes people experiencing faith transitions, grappling with existential anxiety, and folks leaving high demand religions, especially the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Mormonism. I work with clients that settle along the full existential/spiritual spectrum, including atheists, agnostics, spiritual explorers, religious folks, and those who find the question of religion or spirituality irrelevant to them.

I also frequently work with people recovering from narcissistic abuse, systems of coercive control, and difficult family dynamics.

In the realm of existential issues, I offer supportive exploration of finding one’s own path in the face of existential anxiety, dread, and feelings of meaninglessness, working toward an understanding of humanity's place in the known universe and finding a sense of meaning and purpose that is authentic to each individual.

If you find yourself in any of the categories listed above, I hope that you’ll reach out for a complimentary 15 minute consultation today. I look forward to hearing from you.

Specialties

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) - Recovering from the impact of long-term, repeated traumatic events, such as emotional abuse and neglect. Cognitive struggles may include challenges with memory, focus, and verbal expression. Relational difficulties may include difficulty trusting others and forming secure attachments. People with C-PTSD may also struggle with emotion regulation, identity, and sense of self.

Love addiction - Love addiction creates fixations and compulsions in love interests and can cause desperation or uneasiness when you are away from your lover or sexual partner. Love addicts often find themselves unable to stop seeing a specific person even though they know that seeing that person is destructive to them. It can also result in divorce, affairs, poor job performance, relationship conflict, poor concentration of everyday tasks, enmeshment, clinginess, and extreme emotional highs and lows.

Religious trauma recovery - Religious trauma occurs when a person's religious experience is stressful, degrading, dangerous, abusive, or damaging. Traumatic religious experiences may harm or threaten to harm someone's physical, emotional, mental, sexual, or spiritual health and safety.

Sex addiction - Sex addiction causes a person to lose control over their sexual thoughts and urges. They may compulsively change their day-to-day routine to be able to perform sexual acts and feel out of control when it comes to these decisions, even if they're aware of the negative consequences. They may also suffer from obsessive sexual thoughts, feel shame or depression regarding their sexuality, masturbate excessively, engage in risky sexual behavior, or struggle with compulsive infidelity.

Recovery from cults and high demand groups - Cult recovery can refer to the process of healing from the psychological and spiritual abuse that can occur in cults. Some characteristics of cults include: unreasonable fear of the outside world, a belief that former followers are always wrong in leaving, and a belief that the group or leader is always right.

LGBTQIA, gender, & sexuality topics - Exploring topics of sexuality, gender, and identity; coping with discrimination and oppression; navigating relationship, family, and cultural challenges.
