Professional statement

Melissa Melzer, LCPC, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor providing secure telehealth therapy across Illinois and PSYPACT states. She works primarily with college age individuals and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma-related concerns, and relationship challenges. Her clients often seek support during periods of transition, emotional overwhelm, or when they feel stuck and uncertain about how to move forward in their lives. Melissa is known for offering a warm, culturally responsive, and affirming therapeutic space where clients can explore their experiences at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

Her clinical approach is collaborative, structured, and integrative, drawing from evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Written Exposure Therapy for trauma. She also incorporates trauma-informed care and emphasizes practical, skills-based interventions that clients can apply in their daily lives. Melissa balances this structured framework with flexibility, using direct communication, humor when appropriate, and a strengths-based perspective to foster engagement and insight.

Melissa is deeply committed to creating a supportive and nonjudgmental environment grounded in cultural sensitivity and LGBTQIA+ affirmation. She believes that healing occurs through both meaningful emotional processing and the development of concrete coping strategies that promote resilience and self-understanding. Her work emphasizes helping clients build emotional regulation, improve relationships, and reconnect with their personal strengths.

She earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with a Counseling Practice concentration from Roosevelt University. Her professional experience spans university counseling centers, community mental health clinics, rape crisis support services, and private practice settings. This diverse background informs her trauma-informed and client-centered approach, particularly in working with individuals affected by PTSD, grief, and complex life stressors.

Message to clients

Before starting sessions with me, it may be helpful to know that I primarily work with college-age individuals and adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, and life transitions. I provide secure telehealth services across Illinois and PSYPACT states, creating a flexible and accessible space for clients to engage in therapy from where they feel most comfortable. My approach is structured but adaptable, meaning I may introduce practical tools and skills early on while also making space for deeper emotional processing at a pace that feels safe for you. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Written Exposure Therapy, always tailoring treatment to your specific needs and goals.

My hope is that therapy with me feels collaborative, grounded, and supportive rather than overwhelming or rigid. I aim to help clients build practical coping strategies, strengthen emotional regulation, and better understand patterns that may be keeping them stuck. At the same time, I place strong emphasis on creating a culturally responsive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and trauma-informed space where you can show up as you are without judgment. You do not need to have everything figured out before beginning therapy is a space to explore, learn, and grow at your own pace, and I am here to support you through that process.
