Phillip Lowry is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 25 years of counseling experience. Throughout his years of practice, he has worked with individuals (adults and adolescents), and Families.
Phillip specializes in the areas of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, family relationship problems, trauma informed care and cultural competency. Sub-categories of these problems include: anger management, trauma, difficulty adjusting to life stressors, and acculturation issues. Phillip has a 200-hour teacher certification in yoga and may incorporate physical practices and breathing exercises into sessions for clients who are interested.
Phillip truly believes in the importance of cultural competency within his practice, allowing cultural differences to enhance his relationship with his clients through respect and understanding. He identifies acculturation issues as: a person of a cultural group who may encounter difficulty adapting to the beliefs and value systems of the dominant culture. And, sometimes experiencing direct and/or systemic maltreatment from the dominant culture in which they are living.
Phillip's past work experience includes clinical counseling at a community mental health center, and working as a social worker for the State of RI. Before entering the human services and mental health fields, Phillip proudly served as a member of the United States Air Force for eight years as a law enforcement specialist.

Sees clients who are frustrated by the power/privilege in institutions, challenges in college or in not getting promoted at work, etc. Has particular experience working with clients in the African, African American, and Latino communities
Depression and mood disorders - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life
Adolescent work - Working with adolescents, teenagers, and parents on social, academic, and/or emotional challenges throughout teenage years; addressing anxiety, family conflicts, peer relationships, school stress, transition to college, social media pressures, self-esteem, hopelessness about the future, emotional dysregulation
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)
Anger management - Addressing sudden outbursts of anger or sustained resentment; developing healthy anger expression and outlets
