Professional statement

Rebecca Mitchell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Manhattan who partners with individuals ready to move beyond traditional talk therapy. Her clients are often deeply self-aware, having already explored their histories through reading or previous counseling, yet feel stuck in familiar ruts. She specializes in relieving the persistent weights of trauma, anxiety, and the quiet, lasting echoes of growing up in chaotic or invalidating environments. Rather than merely discussing past hardships, Rebecca addresses the places where these wounds still live: in what the nervous system continues to believe, long after the mind has rationalized the story.

Her approach, grounded in EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS), bridges the gap between understanding a problem and truly healing from it. In her room, the hidden, protective, or burdened parts of who you are will be welcomed with genuine curiosity rather than judgment. Rebecca’s ultimate hope is that you leave her care feeling profoundly seen, realizing your pain makes structural sense, and discovering that the traits you once carried as shameful are actually worthy of profound compassion.

This deep respect for human resilience stems from her earlier career as a special education teacher, which shaped her belief that everyone is working remarkably hard just to navigate their day. Refined by clinical training at Hunter College and specialized trauma work at the New York VA PTSD clinic, her practice honors the immense transformation that occurs when someone is met precisely where they are.

Rebecca welcomes clients for in-person sessions in Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan, and provides virtual care throughout New York State. She offers a complimentary 15-minute consultation to explore a partnership, with regular sessions hosted at $250.

Message to clients

Starting therapy can feel incredibly heavy, especially if you're used to white knuckling your way through life and keeping your struggles to yourself. I don't see our work together as a project to "fix" something broken in you. The depression, anxiety, or coping habits you carry are completely logical reactions to what you've survived.

You don't need your thoughts organized or your emotions wrapped up before you reach out. Show up exactly as you are: messy, exhausted, conflicted, or unsure of what comes next.

My goal is an active, honest partnership. I won't always get everything right, and I want us to build a relationship secure enough that you can tell me when something isn't working or when you feel misunderstood.

I never underestimate how much energy it takes to get through a normal day while carrying old pain. I promise to meet whatever you bring with respect, honesty, and warmth.

My deepest hope is that you learn to love yourself. Being truly seen in your pain means you no longer have to face it alone. The parts of you that cause the most suffering are usually just trying to keep you safe. When we learn to listen to them instead of fight them, they begin to settle , and you get back the freedom to live on your own terms.

Specialties

Anxiety - Anxiety is the body's alarm system stuck in the on position, sounding whether or not there is a fire. The work begins with helping the nervous system find its way back to calm, and then looking at what set the alarm off in the first place.

Borderline personality disorder - Many people with BPD have spent years being told they are too much. In our work together, we look at what those intense responses are protecting and help you find more freedom without losing the depth of feeling that makes you who you are.

Depression - Depression has a particular cruelty, you can often see clearly what would help, and feel completely unable to get there. Underneath most depression is a weight of unprocessed feeling that, when it finally moves, often lifts the depression with it

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - PTSD often develops from a specific event that broke something in how you understood yourself and the world. The brain gets stuck trying to process what happened, and the past keeps feeling present: through flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, or a body that never got the message that it's over. Using EMDR, we work directly with those memories so they can finally become the past.

Relationship issues - The patterns that show up in relationships rarely start there. We trace them to their roots and work to change them at that level, so that your relationships can finally reflect who you are now, not who you learned to be.

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) - Complex PTSD often develops so gradually that you may not recognize it as trauma at all. It lives in the body, in patterns of relating, in a chronic sense that something is wrong with you. It isn't. And it can change.
