Professional statement

There's a moment when the coping strategies that got you this far stop working... When the patterns become impossible to ignore, when the life you've built stops feeling like yours. That moment is why you're here. And it's exactly where my work begins.

I'm Rebecca Ward, therapist, addiction counselor, and creative arts therapist with 18 years of experience working with adults who are ready to do something genuinely different. My clients aren't broken. They're people carrying things that are too heavy to carry alone anymore. Trauma that rewired them. A relationship with substances they're finally ready to examine. Patterns they can't seem to exit no matter how clearly they see them.

What I bring is rare. Three licenses, LPC, LCADC, and LCAT, which mean I can work with the full complexity of what you're experiencing without sending you elsewhere. I've treated the most intense cases in New Jersey's psychiatric hospitals and addiction centers. I won't flinch at what you bring in. And as a licensed art therapist, there's more than one door into this work, for clients who feel things more than they can say them.

My approach is warm, direct, and completely personalized. I draw from DBT, CBT, and trauma-informed care to build something specific to you, because your life is specific and your therapy should be too.

I work with adults and am proudly LGBTQIA+ affirming. In person in Montclair, NJ — telehealth across NJ and NY.

Message to clients

Before we begin, I want you to know something important: whatever you're carrying into our first session, the shame, the confusion, the exhaustion, the thing you've never said out loud to anyone, you can bring all of it. There is nothing you can say that will shock me, nothing that will make me think less of you, and nothing too complicated or too messy for this space. I've spent 18 years and thousands of hours sitting with people in their hardest moments. I can hold it.

I also want you to know what I'm hoping for you, not just symptom relief, not just better coping, but genuine change. The kind where you look back six months from now and can't quite believe how differently you're moving through your life. That's what I'm working toward with every client, every session. I'm not interested in keeping you in therapy longer than you need to be. I'm interested in actually helping you get somewhere.

One last thing: I'll always be honest with you, about what I'm seeing, what I think is getting in the way, and what I believe you're capable of. That kind of directness, wrapped in genuine warmth and zero judgment, is what I bring to this work every single day. I can't wait to meet you.

Specialties

Addiction - You don't have to have hit rock bottom to deserve help. Whether you're sober-curious, questioning your relationship with alcohol, or ready to stop using substances as your main way of coping, this is a judgment-free space with real clinical depth, backed by my licensure as a certified addiction counselor (LCADC).

Anxiety - The worry that won't turn off. The tension you've stopped noticing because it's always there. The 3am thoughts that make no sense in daylight. I don't just help you manage anxiety, we figure out where it's coming from and actually move the needle so you're not coping with this forever.

Depression - Depression doesn't always look like sadness. Sometimes it looks like flatness, exhaustion, going through the motions, or a quiet sense that the life you're living doesn't feel like yours anymore. We don't just treat the symptoms, we get to what's underneath them.

Divorce & separation - Divorce is a loss even when you wanted it, and it deserves real support, not just survival mode. Whether you're in the thick of it or trying to rebuild after, I help you navigate the grief, the identity shift, and the question of who you're becoming on the other side.

Relationship issues - This is individual therapy, not couples work. It's your space to understand why you keep ending up in the same dynamics, what you actually need from the people in your life, and what it would take to stop repeating the patterns that keep costing you.

Trauma - Trauma doesn't always come from one dramatic event, sometimes it's years of accumulated wounds that quietly rewired how you move through the world. I've worked with the most complex trauma presentations in NJ's psychiatric hospitals, and I can hold whatever you bring in without flinching.
