Professional statement

Dr. Scott Menasco is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in attachment-based, trauma-informed therapy. His clients often have difficulty feeling overwhelmed by emotions including anxiety, leading to conflict in relationship. He balances practical and insight-oriented approaches to help clients learn to manage difficult emotions, talk about them, and soothe themselves. His clients regularly report having developed a greater capacity to manage conflicts internally and in their relationships. They learn to understand and relate to their emotions as part of their own inner wisdom and in doing so experience greater ease and self-confidence.

Dr Scott says, "therapy is largely about learning to relate to the right-brain on it's terms, rather than the terms of our logical mind. When we are able to do that, it opens the door to right-brain/left-brain connection, we feel less divided inside, and more capable of soothing ourselves. We learn how we can practice boundaries and limits, and create safety in our relationships."

Dr. Scott is also an expert on boundaries in relationship; having intensive and thorough training in the treatment of codependency recovery in the model of John Bradshaw.

Message to clients

You are probably tired of reading these things. I know I am. So let me keep it simple. Your challenges are likely a result of not having the right kind environmental support to allow your nervous system to process emotional experience and return to a felt sense of safety. Overtime, you adapted to this lack by developing strategies; secondary pathways to work with uncomfortable experiences.

The good news is that you can develop in new ways. In therapy we approach this subjectively, meaning through your direct experience. We learn to broaden our understanding of the reactions we have, to meet them openly without judgment. Over time, this helps us know what is at the root of our difficulties of anxiety; self-criticism; relationship conflict -- not just conceptually, but from the inside out.

We explore through our felt-sense the ways we have disconnected from what is true for us in order to feel secure in relationship. Little by little we grow in our confidence in trusting our experience, and learn how to speak about it clearly and directly in our relationships-- which makes for more fulfilling connections.
