Professional statement

Sophie Browner is a licensed psychotherapist and clinical social worker based in New York City. She earned her master’s degree in clinical social work from the Smith College School for Social Work and brings a background in community mental health, where she worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds navigating a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges.

She provides psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults throughout New York who are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships, and the experiences that have shaped them. Her approach is relational, collaborative, and insight-oriented, grounded in the belief that meaningful change often begins with curiosity about our inner lives and personal histories.

In her work with clients, she creates a space for reflection and exploration rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction or quick solutions. Together, therapist and client can begin to make sense of longstanding emotional patterns, unconscious dynamics, and ways of relating that may no longer feel useful. By developing a deeper understanding of these experiences, clients often find greater flexibility, self-awareness, and freedom in their daily lives and relationships.

She has particular experience working with anxiety and depression, trauma, relationship and attachment concerns, LGBTQIA+ experiences, identity exploration, and life transitions. She welcomes individuals who may be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply interested in understanding themselves more fully.

She offers both in-person psychotherapy in New York City and virtual sessions throughout New York State.

Message to clients

Starting therapy can feel both hopeful and uncertain, and I believe it's important to find a therapist who feels like the right fit for you. I offer a free 15-minute consultation as an opportunity for us to connect, discuss what brings you to therapy, and determine whether working together feels like a good match.

If we decide to move forward, I think of the first three sessions as an extended consultation. This gives us time to develop a fuller understanding of what brings you to treatment, your history, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Together, we'll begin to explore the patterns, relationships, and experiences that shape your emotional life, while also considering what our work together might look like moving forward.

My hope is to create a thoughtful, nonjudgmental space where you feel comfortable bringing whatever is on your mind. Whether you're navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, questions about identity, a life transition, or a general sense of feeling stuck, therapy can offer an opportunity to better understand yourself and create space for meaningful change over time.
