Women of Color Therapy Group

Description

The Women of Color Psychotherapy Group is an open-ended, inclusive, and empowering space designed to support women of color in processing and healing from difficult life experiences. In light of a racially charged sociopolitical environment, a shifting governmental landscape, the ongoing global pandemic with other global disasters, and the compounded effects of systemic oppression and trauma, it is more critical than ever to create a space that fosters safety, affirmation, and collective healing. This group provides a platform for women of color to come together in solidarity, resisting the pervasive “isms” that perpetuate discrimination, marginalization and othering.

Focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by women of color (WOC/BIPOC) holding several co-occurring identities, the group invites exploration of how racism, discrimination, and intersecting forms of trauma (including relational trauma, histories of abuse/neglect, experiences of poverty, etc.) have manifested and shaped their lives. The weekly sessions will offer support, insight, psychoeducation, and a space to explore complex, interwoven issues surrounding racial and cultural identities in the context of contemporary social and political challenges.

We are looking to recruit women of color (18+ years old) who are non-white and identify as part of a marginalized community of color (including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, mixed identities). Trans women and non-binary individuals who identify with a community of color are also welcome.

Group Therapist

Anusha is a clinical psychologist who works with individuals navigating a range of emotional, relational, and identity-related concerns. She sees clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, loneliness, life transitions, and relationship challenges, as well as those seeking deeper self-understanding even in the absence of acute distress. She is especially passionate about working with individuals holding marginalized, multicultural, and intersecting identities, with a focus on identity, belonging, and intergenerational trauma.

Anusha’s therapeutic approach is trauma-informed and grounded in psychodynamic and relational theories. She understands symptoms as both revealing and concealing deeper emotional experiences, and she attends to both immediate concerns and underlying patterns. Her style is collaborative, warm, and reflective, and she integrates empathy, curiosity, and humor into her work. She aims to help clients develop insight in therapy and translate that insight into meaningful change in their daily lives.

Her perspective is shaped in part by her experience growing up between the United States and India, which has deeply informed her understanding of culture, identity, and belonging. These experiences contribute to her nuanced, culturally attuned approach to clinical work and her commitment to fostering a sense of internal stability and self-understanding in her clients. Anusha is also deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in her practice.

Anusha provides in person and virtual sessions out of both our Midtown and Flatiron offices. She works with adolescents, young adults, and adults, and tailors her approach to meet each client’s individual needs and goals.
