Professional statement

Carol Ann Maner is a Social Worker (LCSW-S), and a certified Gambling Counselor (ICGC-I). Carol Ann’s clinical training is informed by her personal recovery experience. In 2024, Carol Ann celebrated 20 years of sobriety in a recovery program where she has been a member for 30 years.

Carol Ann’s office at the Gambling Clinic of Texas is located in West Houston in the Energy Corridor. She works with adults of all ages, and offers both in-person and telehealth therapy sessions.

Carol Ann is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Both therapies have been shown to be clinically effective – as well as personally meaningful - for clients. These non-judgmental approaches allow clients to learn to respond more effectively when urges to gamble occur.

Many of Carol Ann’s clients begin therapy with questions about whether – or how - to stop gambling due to financial distress, damaged relationships, and/or powerful urges to gamble. Carol Ann is dedicated to working with recovering gamblers, and their family members who have been affected. For this reason, she also has advanced training in resolving financial betrayal, anxiety, and depression.

Carol Ann's style is approachable, honest, and accepting. When clients first start therapy, she tries to understand, in the client's own words, what might have happened recently that caused them to seek treatment now.

Carol Ann received her Master of Social Work (MSW) from University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW). While working at Daring Ventures Counseling, she saw the devastating impact of problem gambling on families in Texas. In 2024, Carol Ann and her husband, Paul, opened a clinic focused on treating problem gambling and gambling harms in Texas.

Outside of private practice, Carol Ann is involved in Twelve Step service, and loves to work in her garden.

Message to clients

Almost to a person, I have had people tell me they have engaged in risky behaviors that they desperately want to stop - and they also want me to know they are good people inside. I believe them 100%. I believe they have a moral compass that led them to want to change. To me, their character is not the problem - deeply engrained behavior is.

From my own experience, I remember how confounding and scary it was to decide to stop - only to discover myself engaged in behavior I had committed not to do a short time later!

I want to represent that as scary or baffling as problem or addictive behaviors may be, there is a way to get them to slow down and stop - or I wouldn't be writing this message to you right now.

In fact, anyone reading this has probably started the process of behavioral change by engaging in this search! You can keep the process going by picking an addiction-focused therapist, making an appointment - and just showing up!

You're already on the path. You got this!
