Professional statement

Dr. Cheryl Ellis is a licensed clinical psychologist at Deeper Than Color who has dedicated more than three decades to supporting children, adolescents, young adults, and families as they navigate challenges related to trauma, depression, and identity stress. Her clientele often includes individuals seeking culturally attuned care that honors the complexity of their lived experiences and the intersections of race, gender, and community. She is committed to walking alongside clients as they pursue healing and growth, ensuring that each person’s voice and goals remain central to the therapeutic process.

Her therapy approach is collaborative and integrative. Dr. Ellis draws from evidence‑based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and somatic therapies. She believes therapy is a journey undertaken together, where clients are the experts of their own lives and she serves as a guide and partner. By weaving cultural backgrounds and personal narratives into treatment, she creates a space where all aspects of identity are acknowledged and respected.

Dr. Ellis’s professional background reflects both clinical expertise and leadership in advancing equity. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Hartford, becoming the first African American to graduate from its Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology. She has worked across outpatient clinics, inpatient programs, community‑based services, and school‑based settings. Beyond direct practice, she facilitates statewide collaborations on diversity, equity, and social justice, and trains agency leaders on topics such as intergenerational trauma, intercultural communication, and empowering individuals to find their voice.

Based in Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Ellis offers remote sessions, making her services accessible to clients across diverse settings. Her practice reflects a deep commitment to culturally responsive care, professional excellence, and the belief that healing is possible when identities are honored and journeys are shared.

Message to clients

Beginning therapy can feel uncertain, and I want you to know that our work together will be guided by your goals and your pace. My role is to listen closely, help you clarify what matters most, and support you in finding new ways to move forward. You don’t need to arrive with all the answers. Therapy is a space for exploration as much as healing.

I use approaches such as CBT, EMDR, DBT, Internal Family Systems, and somatic practices, but the most important part is tailoring our work to fit your life and experiences. I pay attention to how culture, family, and community shape the challenges you face, and I strive to create a space where every part of your identity is respected.

My hope is that you leave each session feeling more grounded and connected to yourself. Progress may not always be linear, but together we’ll build tools and insights that help you navigate stress, trauma, and change with greater resilience. Therapy is about honoring your journey, and I look forward to walking alongside you as you take these steps.
