Professional statement

My name is Collin Stanhope, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. I have worked with adolescents and adults for over 7 years.

Many clients come to me having tried to work through something and now feel in the position that support or help feels necessary. This often means needing to care for themselves differently, and may mean addressing something they've been avoiding. Clients I've worked with are deeply introspective, balance their logical and emotional side, and are eager to understand their patterns and behaviors. Some are deeply resistance to being vulnerable, however they understand the need to try new things to get different results; and, they often want to live and feel better.

I use approaches like IFS, ACT, CBT, Mindfulness and the mind body connection to help you understand yourself better. I believe through awareness of the present moment you can notice your sensations, urges, emotions and thoughts, and through different approaches choose how you want to move in the world.

I've worked with many people with ADHD and use these approaches together. Creating time between something happening and your reaction is powerful, and through this you can be empowered to choose different responses to addictions, procrastination, overeating/overspending, or other reactions. I believe through these interventions, learning how to manage emotions, and practical skills it is possible to create new patterns and habits.

Message to clients

If you are unsure about therapy, then I appreciate you! With therapy there may be something you have to gain and something you have to lose. Doing something new can mean confronting ongoing patterns and ways of living. Many people I've met share they didn't start therapy earlier because they worried what people might think, or that it feels like they're a failure. When people share this, I am so glad they are because it is incredibly natural and normal to have thoughts like this. My first reaction is a question — do you want to try a new way of dealing with things, and are you open to facing some discomfort to help you do that?

I believe in caring for yourself, and acknowledging help as a strength because you want to be more aligned with who you want to become. Being here is a huge step already. The best part is that you can stop anytime, and there will always be no judgment.
