Dr. Douglas Sadownick is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Los Angeles, California, with over 30 years of experience in clinical practice, teaching, and community-based work. He works with adults and adolescents, with particular depth in serving LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as people navigating identity, relationships, trauma, and questions of meaning and purpose. His practice is especially attuned to those who feel “in between”—between cultures, identities, or life phases—and who are seeking not only symptom relief, but a deeper sense of integration.
Dr. Sadownick’s therapeutic approach is relational, psychodynamic, and existential, while also drawing from cognitive behavioral and somatic traditions. Sessions are collaborative and conversational, grounded in respect and curiosity. He works actively in the room, engaging clients in dialogue about what is helping and how the work can be refined. Together, therapist and client develop goals that support emotional safety, self-understanding, and meaningful change, while making room for vitality and fuller expression of the self.
For three decades, Dr. Sadownick has served on the faculty of Antioch University, where he founded and directed the LGBTQ+ Specialization in Clinical Psychology and the COLORS LGBTQ Youth Counseling Center. He is widely respected for his contributions to training therapists working with queer communities and communities of color, helping shape a more humanistic, culturally responsive clinical practice.
In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Sadownick is an award-winning author and public educator. His recent book, Healing Gay Sex and Love: A Group Experience, reflects his integrative approach, blending clinical insight with narrative and depth psychology.
Dr. Sadownick offers in-person sessions in Los Angeles as well as remote therapy throughout California. He is available for individual therapy and consultation, and welcomes those seeking a thoughtful, engaged, depth-oriented therapeutic experience.
