Professional statement

Heather Lowrey is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Washington, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas, and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). For over 15 years, she’s worked with clients who notice the same themes popping up in three big areas: food, relationships, and money — the places where coping, control, and connection like to hide.

Heather’s style is collaborative, conversational, and real. She helps clients spot intimacy-avoidant moves (like over-functioning, disappearing into work, doom-scrolling dating apps, or picking fights instead of naming needs) and then learn how to move toward more steady, genuine connection with themselves and others. Sessions are a place where you can say the “I’ve never told anyone this” stuff without having to perform, impress, or apologize.

Heather believes you can’t change what you’re not aware of. Together, you’ll get curious about your beliefs and stories around money, food and body, and love and sex—how they formed, how they’ve been trying to protect you, and how they might now be keeping you stuck. From there, you’ll work on practical shifts that support the kind of life and relationships you actually want, not just the ones you’ve been settling for.

Message to clients

When we work together, you’ll probably hear me use the phrase “intimacy-avoidant behaviors.” In a nutshell, that means using something on the outside to manage something painful or overwhelming on the inside. That might look like overspending or overshopping, getting stuck in painful relationships or sexual patterns (including excessive pornography use, codependency, or avoiding sex and relationships altogether), turning to substances, or feeling trapped in cycles with food and your body.

My hope is that, before we dive into changing anything, you feel genuinely understood. We’re not here to label you as “too much” or “not enough” — we’re here to get curious about how these behaviors started, what they’ve been helping you cope with, and what they’re costing you now. Together, we’ll work toward building more honest, steady connections with yourself and others, so you don’t have to rely so heavily on those old patterns to feel okay.
