Professional statement

Jen Signet Yovino is a creative arts therapist based in Long Island, NY. She works with people interested in using the creative arts alongside traditional talk therapy to tend to mental health needs. Jen strives to create an atmosphere where her clients feel relaxed, safe, and supported. She is passionate about working with highly sensitive people (HSPs), the LGBTQ+ community, artists, performers, trauma survivors, folks in eating disorder recovery, and those navigating dating and complex relationships. She also helps people to understand and cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Jen's approach is humanistic and client-centered at its core, and she honors each person's individuality, unique needs, and inherent strengths. Her art therapy room is filled with fine art materials that clients can use freely, playfully, even experimentally, and without judgment. If working with Jen virtually, she will recommend materials to have at your home, and also help you to be resourceful of what you may already have. Whereas in an art class there may be emphasis on how "good" a finished piece of art is, art therapy is about being present with the process and being a curious and compassionate witness to the work. Jen's strong background in psychodynamic psychotherapy comes in here, as she helps client's then understand, through the context of past and present, the reflections that can emerge while making art (or through talking alone). Art therapy can help with self-regulation, insight, anxiety management, self-expression, and finding meaning amidst life's challenges.

Jen's background is distinctive in that she completed master's degrees in both Clinical Psychology and Art Therapy and Creativity Development. Her vast clinical experiences include intensive home-based family therapy, school-based psychotherapy, community outpatient art therapy, and private practice. She founded her own private practice in 2019 and works primarily with adults.

Message to clients

Having a safe space to connect, create, and be understood in can be healing. I value people trusting me with their challenges in life, and am genuinely committed towards supporting my clients' mental health needs. I also love making art, and supporting others in their creative processes. At the same time, art making in sessions is always optional, and some clients may prefer talk psychotherapy alone. When we meet, we will discuss your needs and tailor the therapy accordingly.

The therapy space is a collaborative one, and clients always have a voice in their treatment. I listen carefully, ask exploratory questions, and really get to know my clients. Together we start to notice life themes and make sense of things. People often find that with insight and understanding comes improved mood and new adaptive behaviors.
