Professional statement

Dr. Joseph Smetter is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in helping adults navigate trauma, anxiety, burnout, and the emotional weight that builds up over time. He works with people who may appear composed and capable to others but are privately struggling—whether it’s from past trauma, chronic worry, self-doubt, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve them.

His therapy style is warm, thoughtful, and straightforward. He focuses on building a collaborative relationship where clients can be fully themselves, even if they’re unsure about therapy or hesitant to open up. Dr. Smetter is trained in multiple evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). His work is grounded in research, but always tailored to fit each individual—not a formula or checklist.

Before transitioning to private practice, Dr. Smetter spent his training and early career working as a psychologist in the Department of Veterans Affairs. There, he treated a wide range of clinical issues and worked extensively with clients from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds, including healthcare workers, military veterans, and others in high-stress or trauma-exposed roles.

He offers online therapy to adults located in Illinois, Wisconsin, and other PSYPACT-participating states. His approach is especially well-suited for individuals looking to deepen their self-understanding, regain clarity, and move forward with a sense of purpose and direction.

Message to clients

Reaching out is often the hardest part. As a psychologist who focuses on helping people process difficult experiences, I have heard many clients say that they hesitated for a long time—decades even—before seeking help. And whether your difficult experiences involve past trauma, current demands of your work, or big life changes, I understand that it is important to build trust before any type of support can be effective.

Therefore, we will take things at a pace that works for you. An initial free consultation call will help us determine if the services I offer sound like a good fit to your needs. From there, we will spend time going over your concerns and history in more detail, with the goal of identifying what brought you here and what you want to accomplish in therapy. I will provide you evidence-based treatment options that I believe can help, and we will work together to decide which approach we will ultimately take. From there, we will take your healing process one step at a time, with frequent check-ins about how it’s going. I believe that therapy works best as a shared effort—I bring my clinical experience and you bring your expertise about yourself.

I know how hard it can be to take the first step, so I try to make the process as easy and relaxed as possible. If you're thinking about taking that step, I'd be happy to speak with you.
