Dr. McClendon (they/them) is a Black, queer, neurodivergent Clinical Psychologist. Dr. McClendon trained at Harvard University, Boston University, the VA Healthcare System, and Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. McClendon enjoys working with clients of Color with intersectional identities, whether that be queerness, gender nonconformance, and/or neurodivergence. They use a culturally responsive approach, meaning that they take into account how your culture shapes your mental health experience.
In individual therapy, Dr. McClendon starts with a thorough intake appointment, where they learn more about your background and why you are seeking therapy. Then, Dr. McClendon collaboratively develops specific treatment goals that are worked toward through the rest of therapy. The individuals they see are often navigating high-pressure environments where their identity(ies) are not valued. Their clients may be battling perfectionism and a feeling that they are “not good enough.” The couples they work with are most often queer and navigating polyamory.
Dr. McClendon uses science-backed methods like cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral therapy to support you in accepting what you can’t change, and changing what you can. They are certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, for both individuals and couples. They are also currently offering group CPT.
