Dr. Kristin Schaefer-Schiumo is a Clinical Psychologist who welcomes adults and adolescents to her practice in Long Island, New York. She works collaboratively with clients experiencing both current and ongoing anxiety, depression, trauma, social anxiety and making successful life transitions. Additionally, she works with couples and families.
When clients visit Dr. Schaefer-Schiumo, they often find that their symptoms of anxiety are impacting their professional life or academic performance. Others feel stuck in a negative headspace, and may find themselves ruminating over situations or catastrophizing possible scenarios on a regular basis.
Dr. Schaefer Schiumo works from a creative, integrative lens combining mindfulness based, cognitive, body-based and experiential approaches. She is strengths-based and client-focused, and dedicated to helping clients utilize their innate strengths in order to move forward during difficult experiences and situations. Approaches often integrated include Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Couples Counseling, and Trauma-Based Approaches.
In addition to her private practice, Dr. Schaefer-Schiumo is a professor at Long Island University. Here, she teaches in the school and mental health counseling master's programs where she is fortunate enough to train the next generation of mental health professionals.
