Professional statement

Kyle Canales is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in Manhattan who approaches therapy as a collaborative process rooted in accompaniment. He believes therapy is not something done to a person, but something built with them. Together, therapist and client decide what deserves attention, what patterns require examination, and what change would feel meaningful. His aim is to see you clearly, meet you where you are, and help you chart a course that feels authentically your own.

Kyle works with individuals and couples navigating relationship strain, vulnerability challenges, suppressed authenticity, perfectionistic striving, and wavering confidence. He has found that many clients share less conscious struggles that quietly shape their lives. In sessions, these patterns are examined to determine whether they have become maladaptive. His work centers on helping clients assess whether their coping strategies are still serving them or limiting growth.

Described as deeply curious and softly confrontational, Kyle balances warmth with directness. He speaks openly about whether the changes discussed in therapy feel possible in real life, not just within the safety of the therapy room. He invites consistent feedback to ensure therapy is effective and adjusts structure, pacing, and interventions based on what clients report they need. Kyle does not oversell himself. He is transparent about his limits and considers himself a lifelong learner committed to ethical and thoughtful care. He regularly asks: What makes a person change? What does it mean to be mentally healthy? How do we know therapy is working?

Kyle has been practicing at the same Manhattan-based group practice for nearly four years, working with clients ranging from adolescence through adulthood. He provides both in-person sessions in Manhattan and telehealth sessions for New York residents. He welcomes clients who are open to reflection, collaboration, and honest dialogue about the therapy process itself.

Message to clients

Starting therapy with me does not require you to perform insight or have the right language. I hope you can take off the armor when you walk into the room. Let your preconceived ideas about how therapy is supposed to work fall away. You are welcome to ask me how I think about therapy, or we can construct its meaning together. There is no correct way to “do” this. My role is to meet you where you are and help you explore what feels worth changing and worth processing.

You can expect curiosity, attention to detail, and a steady presence. Clients have shared that I remember themes from months prior and connect them to present conversations. Others describe my approach as calm and thoughtful, especially during times of crisis or after returning to therapy with hesitation. I take this work seriously. I care about whether what we discuss translates into your real life. I will ask for feedback and adjust our work accordingly. Therapy should feel collaborative and useful, not performative.

Outside of sessions, I enjoy reading. Books I have found meaningful recently include How to Know a Person, Solve for Happy, The Gifts of Imperfection, Think Again, and The Alchemist. They reflect what I value: curiosity, humility, courage, perspective, and the belief that change is possible when we look honestly at ourselves.
