Professional statement

Lana Hurst, LMHC, is a psychotherapist and psychoanalytic candidate based in New York City. She offers psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy for adults navigating religious trauma, identity shifts, and the complexities of desire and belonging. Her work focuses especially on LGBTQ+ adults, individuals shaped by rigid faith or cultural systems, and those seeking a more internally coherent and self-directed life.

Her approach is grounded in long-term, insight-oriented psychoanalytically informed work. Rather than concentrating on symptom reduction alone, she attends to repetition, embodiment, and the ways early environments continue to organize the present. Therapy becomes a space where speech is taken seriously and unconscious patterns can be examined without rush or correction. She has additional training in EMDR and trauma-informed care.

Drawing on her background in theology and mental health counseling, Lana is particularly interested in how gender, spirituality, and liberation intersect. She supports clients in thinking carefully about the structures that have shaped them and in making room for something more alive and chosen to emerge.

Lana earned her MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary and her MA in Mental Health Counseling & Spiritual Integration from Fordham University. She is a licensed mental health counselor in New York and a registered telehealth provider in Florida. She practices in private practice, with an office in Manhattan’s Financial District.

Message to clients

Beginning therapy often means turning toward what has felt too painful, confusing, or unspeakable to face alone. I see our work as a place where we listen carefully—to symptoms, to repetition, to what hurts, and to what continues to insist beneath the surface. We are not trying to erase parts of you, but to understand how they formed and what they have been protecting.

Therapy can be quietly unsettling. As we examine inherited roles, beliefs, and patterns, familiar structures may loosen. At times this can feel disorienting. My hope is that within that process you begin to experience yourself with greater clarity and freedom—not as something broken, but as someone whose life makes sense in ways that can be understood.

Our work will unfold at a thoughtful pace. I will take your complexity seriously and make room for contradiction, desire, and uncertainty. The aim is not quick reassurance, but a deeper relationship to yourself and to the life you are shaping.
