Professional statement

Dr. Lia Bishop is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist working with adults and couples who are navigating challenging life transitions or who feel stuck in painful experiences from the past. Dr. Bishop specializes in PTSD and trauma, including the ways trauma intersects with anxiety, depression, grief, perfectionism, sexual health and functioning, pregnancy and parenting, and substance use. She also carefully attends to the ways personal identity can shape, and be shaped by, trauma experience and recovery.

Dr. Bishop's work is grounded in a contextual behavioral framework. This approach holds that many patterns in our thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and feelings that now feel problematic or costly originally developed for really understandable reasons. In session, she works with clients to identify those costly patterns, determine what they provide or protect, and find new, more workable ways to get those same needs met. Alongside that, she helps clients clarify what matters most to them and take meaningful action in the direction of the life they want to live. Her work is informed by a longstanding clinical and research interest in the emotional residue of trauma — particularly the way trauma can erode trust in positive emotions, leaving clients with the sense that feelings like joy and safety are off-limits.

For clients focused specifically on PTSD, Dr. Bishop is a certified provider of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE) — two of the most well-researched and effective treatments available. Prior to founding Ember Psychology, she spent years providing this type of rigorous, specialized PTSD treatment within the VA system, where she also completed her postdoctoral residency (2021) and predoctoral internship (2020).

She offers in-person sessions in Denver's Sloan's Lake neighborhood and virtual therapy to clients across 40+ states through PSYPACT.

Message to clients

Trauma and painful life transitions can make your world feel smaller: shrinking what feels possible, complicating relationships, dulling joy, and pulling you away from parts of yourself you once cherished. Whether your current symptoms are consuming or subtle, new or longstanding, I'm glad you're here.

Many of the clients I work with are capable and competent — the person others go to for support. But beneath that controlled exterior, they are navigating painful thought patterns that won't budge, relationships that feel depleting, or a nervous system that rarely settles (disrupted sleep, daytime exhaustion, high reactivity). In therapy, we work together to identify what's happening that isn't serving you well, where those patterns come from, and how you can begin to build a more authentic and empowered life in their place.

I bring an active, evidence-based approach so that you can trust that the effort you invest will lead to meaningful change. I will laugh with you, hold space in painful moments, and gently challenge you. Whether you're hoping to feel safer in your body, hold boundaries more confidently, or simply give yourself permission not to be perfect all the time, we can create a plan that aligns with what you care about most. I firmly believe there is more available to you than simply shouldering the hard stuff. More ease. More connection. More joy. If this resonates, please reach out.
