Liza Berkowitz Mazo is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts who provides psychotherapy to adults and couples of diverse backgrounds and identities in a welcoming, culturally affirmative, and safe therapeutic environment. Liza works with people experiencing a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, relationship difficulties, and other stressors that impact one’s life and functioning.
Liza has specialties in trauma and reproductive mental health including perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, miscarriage and infant loss, traumatic birth, and infertility. Liza has a particular interest in and experience with working with pregnant and postpartum women with histories of disordered eating.
Liza’s practice focuses on healing by understanding thought patterns and relationship dynamics, building healthier relational templates, stabilizing symptoms, developing self-compassion, and processing traumatic events and the impact they have on clients’ lives and relationships. Liza helps her clients identify their internal strengths, develop sustainable coping skills, and expand their emotional awareness. Liza helps clients understand how their past shapes their present so that they can move forward in life with more confidence, intention, and peace.
Liza’s style is warm and engaging, and her approach to treatment is grounded in relational and psychodynamic psychotherapy. She integrates a variety of methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT), and Supportive Therapy to help clients navigate the healing process. Her practice also incorporates a social justice perspective.
In addition to psychotherapy, Liza also provides third party reproduction consultations includes donor gamete educational consultations, egg donor psychological evaluations, and gestational surrogate evaluations. These consultations/evaluations can include the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI).
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)
Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse
Infertility counseling - Understanding infertility interventions and solutions; support during decision-making processes; coping with fertility problems and pregnancy loss
Perinatal mental health - Addressing issues specific to women and families during the pregnancy and postpartum period, including postpartum depression and anxiety
Juvenile offenders - Experience working with juvenile offenders
Couples counseling - Addressing relationship challenges and life transitions; strengthening communication and feelings of security, desire, connection, and love
