Professional statement

Dr. Lucille Waagen is a licensed psychologist in Rhode Island and North Dakota with the authority to practice in all PSYPACT states. Dr. Waagen offers individual therapy for adolescents over 12 and adults of all ages. Her areas of interest include: depression, anxiety, relationships, identity development, vocational stressors and satisfaction, trauma, academic challenges, and adaptation to major life changes. Dr. Waagen specializes in trans-affirming care, 2SLGBTQIA+ identity development, and experiences of queer identities.

Her therapeutic approach is tailored to every client, depending on their unique needs. Dr. Waagen utilizes evidence based methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in her practice. In addition to being informed by research and "best practices," the common theme across her approach as a therapist is a feminist, multicultural lens. Through this lens, she and her clients explore the impact of societal messaging on them and engage in discussion of cultural values as they relate to a client’s experiences. Due to previously working in academic settings, many of her clinical experiences have been university counseling centers and she has a particular interest in working with college and graduate students.

Dr. Waagen received her Ph.D. from the University of North Dakota’s Counseling Psychology program. After receiving her license, Dr. Waagen completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the University of North Dakota as a clinical professor and supervisor for clinicians in training. Dr. Waagen's research has focused on the queer community, queer relationship experiences, and transgender identity development.

Message to clients

I believe everyone who seeks out therapy has the desire to change, and the capacity to grow and learn. Patience is a key component of my approach; clients deserve the time and space needed to gain insight into their experiences and explore how to heal. I seek to offer a safe, nonjudgmental, and empathic space to allow for vulnerability.

In addition, due to all humans having unique experiences, I believe therapeutic services should be tailored to the uniqueness of every person. I seek to integrate culture and identity into our work as to validate unique experiences and further promote a culturally sensitive environment for therapy.

Reaching out is a massive first step and I believe that is worth celebrating. I look forward to hearing from you!
