Professional statement

Mary Walters, LMHC works with adults and young adults who want to feel more connected to themselves and others, heal from past experiences, and live with greater ease and authenticity. Many of the people she works with are navigating anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, trauma, or attachment wounds, or simply feeling stuck or disconnected in some area of life. Her work invites awareness, curiosity, and self-compassion as starting points for meaningful change.

Mary's approach is experiential and integrative, drawing from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, Pain Reprocessing Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, to support each person’s unique process of healing and growth. Through this somatic and relational lens, she helps clients deepen awareness of their inner experience and gently reconnect with the wisdom of their bodies. Before becoming a therapist, Mary worked as a personal fitness trainer and wellness coach. This background continues to shape her understanding of how the body holds experience and how healing unfolds through both emotional and physical awareness.

Mary earned her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine. Her clinical experience includes training at the Renfrew Center for Eating Disorders and the Veterans Affairs Hospital Substance Abuse Program, where she worked with individuals healing from trauma, eating disorders, and substance use concerns. She currently offers individual psychotherapy, both in person at her Brooklyn Heights office and remotely for clients across New York State. Her practice provides a calm, mindful space for exploration, healing, and reconnection.

Message to clients

Experiential therapy is often a little different from traditional talk therapy. While some sessions may involve more conversation, other sessions focus on gently tuning into what’s happening in the present moment—your sensations, emotions, and internal responses—as we explore them together. This way of working helps you connect more deeply with yourself and your feelings, allowing for change that is felt, not just understood.

My intention is to create a space where we can bring curiosity to your inner experience, knowing there is no "right" way to do this work- only the way that feels most supportive and grounded for you. Healing unfolds in its own way, on its own time- we'll honor that as we go.

I hope this work helps you feel more at home within yourself—able not just to feel better, but to feel more fully. To move through life with a greater sense of connection, authenticity, and belonging, and to trust your capacity to meet whatever arises with gentleness and presence.
