Professional statement

Dr. Michelle Herrera is a licensed clinical psychologist based in New York who works with adults from all walks of life. Many of her clients come in feeling stuck — weighed down by stress, loss, or experiences they haven't yet had the space to process. Dr. Herrera is particularly attuned to those navigating burnout, trauma, and life transitions, when this accumulated weight can quietly manifest as anxiety, depression, or a sense of disconnection from the life they've worked so hard to build.

Therapy sessions with Dr. Herrera integrate both insight-oriented and skills-based approaches, drawing from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Psychodynamic Therapy. Working from a trauma-informed lens, she blends evidence-based skills with deeper exploration of the patterns and experiences that shape how we think, feel, and relate to others. She works collaboratively with clients to develop practical tools that bring relief in the present, while also making space to understand what lies beneath.

Dr. Herrera's style is warm, thoughtful, and deeply respectful of each client's unique story. She believes therapy begins with feeling truly seen, heard, and safe — and is committed to creating a space where curiosity, not judgment, guides the work. Her approach is compassionate and interactive, positioning clients as equal partners in the process. Her practice is proudly inclusive, welcoming LGBTQ+ individuals, BIPOC communities, immigrants, and Spanish-speaking clients.

Dr. Herrera earned her Bachelor's Degree from Columbia University and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, with specialized training in forensic psychology. She is a Staff Psychologist at New York Presbyterian, where she co-developed the Trauma Consultation Service for the Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Department, and a Senior Consultant with WorkHaven, helping organizations and employees thrive in high-demand environments. She offers both in-person and tele-health sessions throughout New York.

Message to clients

Life is difficult. Most of the time, we truly are doing the best we can — and it still doesn't feel like enough. You are not alone in that. Feeling stuck is not a permanent state, and often the first step toward the life you want is simply being willing to move into unfamiliar or uncomfortable spaces. That takes real courage, and it is not something you have to do alone.

When you are ready to begin therapy, you can reach out to me directly and request a free 15-minute phone consultation. This is a chance to share what you hope to get from treatment and ask any questions you may have about the process. From there, we can either move forward with scheduling an initial session or, if you feel you'd like to explore other options, I'm happy to offer recommendations. Before our first session, you'll receive a brief intake form — a simple way to share a little more about yourself before we meet.

Therapy, like anything new, can feel strange or exposing at first. My goal is to create a space where your only job is learning how to move through discomfort and into a life that feels more meaningful and authentic to you.
