Dr. Nikhil Jain is a California-licensed Clinical Psychologist with an office in San Francisco and remote therapy available throughout California. He works with young adults and adults from diverse backgrounds and identities, with particular expertise in helping thoughtful, high-functioning people who may seem composed on the outside but feel overwhelmed internally. Many of his clients come to therapy for anxiety, overthinking, perfectionism, people-pleasing, depression, relationship stress, major life transitions, and the lasting impact of past trauma. They often feel stuck in cycles of worry, self-doubt, indecision, or emotional exhaustion and want greater clarity, confidence, and direction.
Dr. Jain’s style is warm, grounded, and collaborative. He creates a space where clients can speak openly, understand the patterns shaping their lives, and build practical tools for change. His approach draws from evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and solution-focused therapy, while remaining flexible and tailored to each client’s needs and goals. He believes insight matters, but that lasting growth requires more than intellectual understanding. In therapy, clients work to stay present with difficult emotions, respond differently in real time, and practice new ways of relating to themselves and others.
Dr. Jain earned his Psy.D. from the APA-accredited California School of Professional Psychology and has more than 10 years of post-graduate clinical experience across outpatient psychiatry, primary care, behavioral sleep medicine, community mental health, trauma-informed care, and inpatient settings. He helps clients move toward healthier, more intentional, and meaningful lives.
Years of Experience: 11 years
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety). Anxiety in high-functioning individuals. Burnout at work at home or work;
Depression - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life. Comparing yourself to others is a big contributor to this! Positive psychology to build resilience and build strengths.
Relationship issues - Understanding one’s wants and needs in relationships; exploring patterns of interaction, addressing concerns, and strengthening satisfaction in relationships and dating. This includes the relationship you have with YOURSELF! Being the "nice gal/guy," always saying "yes" to stuff that you don't really want to do, need to do, or even have time for! Leads to overwhelm, burden, fatigue, stress and even resentment. Guilt feelings for saying "no" or fear of rejection, not being "liked"
Overthinking and Perfectionism - Repetitive thoughts, analysis paralysis, trouble with decision-making, getting "stuck" in a loop with trouble taking action on a clear goal! Trying to achieve more and more with no more room for error. Do it all yourself attitude, "Type A". Help for highly self-critical thoughts, feelings and critical judgement of others.
Career counseling - Support around personal and professional growth; clarifying career goals and implementing steps toward building a fulfilling career and meaningful work-life balance. Academic challenges included such as addressing underperformance in coursework, school avoidance, and procrastination.
Identity development - Understanding, accepting, and strengthening one’s sense of self through the exploration of family pressures/cultural demands and expectations especially in Asian or bicultural contexts, work, and personal values; addressing issues such as, race, class, gender, and sexual orientation, in the context of self experience
