Professional statement

Raphael Apter, LMHC is a licensed mental health counselor located in Boston, MA. Raphael is strongly committed to understanding and advocating for social justice issues, and many of his clients arrive at therapy because of the emotions that come with a deep sense of national and global injustice. Raphael works with clients to address any feelings of hopelessness or lack of optimism clients might feel about the future and that impact their overall mental health. Raphael also helps clients to work through recurrent episodes of anxiety, depression, and grief as well as to safely explore and process traumatic experiences.

Raphael’s approach to therapy combines many trusted and accepted therapy modalities. Raphael provides psycho-education to clients about topics like attachment theory and family systems. He often utilizes a psychodynamic approach, asking clients about their core motivations, needs, and desires. Raphael assists clients with setting goals for themselves, be that to address recurrent intrusive thoughts and emotional patterns, to engage in more healthy relationships, or to make changes in their lives. Raphael supports clients when facing potential roadblocks, encouraging clients to practice self-compassion when addressing them.

Raphael earned a Master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and is licensed in the state of Massachusetts. He has over a decade of clinical experience as a practicing therapist. Raphael works with clients individually and with couples and families. He has expertise in and training to support trauma survivors, those in recovery, and the LGBTQIA+ communities. His goal is to empower clients to live closely to their values, and affirms his clients’ identities, experiences, and choices so they can feel hopeful even in uncertain times.

Message to clients

I look forward to meeting and talking with prospective clients about how I may be able to help and support them.

I have an eclectic approach; one that borrows from many different theories and techniques to best serve the needs of my clients. I often focus in on the stories and narratives we learn to tell ourselves, and work with clients to find alternatives to the patterns of thinking that keep them feeling unable to make progress in their lives. I draw most from strengths-based and client-centered approaches; ones that are affirming and self-esteem building.

The therapeutic relationship is a special and sacred bond. I encourage all prospective and current clients to openly and regularly discuss with me about what they need from their sessions in order to feel that real progress is being made. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any further questions prior to requesting an appointment.
