Professional statement

Dr. Rebecca D. Forkner is a clinical psychologist licensed in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New York. She works via teletherapy and specializes in helping college students, young adults, and adults who are struggling with anxiety, worry, depression, and related patterns of distress. She has also worked with more complex presentations of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, where traditional therapy alone (ERP) is often not an easy fit.

Many of the people Dr. Forkner works with are high-functioning but feel overwhelmed internally - caught in cycles of overthinking, self-criticism, panic, or difficulty finding ease in relationships or at work. Her approach is grounded in mindfulness and emphasizes present-moment awareness, attention to the nervous system, and cultivating a more compassionate relationship with oneself.

In therapy, clients learn to recognize when they are getting pulled into thought spirals, to better understand how stress shows up in the body, and to respond to difficult experiences with greater clarity and choice. Dr. Forkner also helps clients build healthier boundaries, navigate relational challenges, and develop steadiness when anxiety or strong emotions arise.

Her work tends to be relational and longer-term. While drawing from mindfulness-based approaches, she also integrates elements of CBT, ACT, DBT, and psychodynamic therapy as needed. The goal is not to “fix” clients, but to help them feel more grounded, connected, and able to meet life’s challenges with less suffering and more confidence.

Message to clients

I am naturally drawn, with warmth and compassion, to people who are suffering. My hope is to be present with you in that suffering - to help make sense of it as something human and understandable, rather than something wrong or shameful. Together, we work to gently bring what’s difficult into awareness, to find ways to ease suffering in the moment, and over time to help you develop the ability to do this for yourself. The goal is not to eliminate challenge, but to change how you experience and relate to it.

It’s important to know that this work unfolds at your pace. For some people, it takes time to warm up to practicing skills outside of session, and I am patient with that process. At the same time, lasting change tends to happen more fully when therapy extends beyond our time together. I offer many practical tools to support this, and I am an enthusiastic and steady cheerleader as you experiment, struggle, and grow.

If you’ve had difficulty feeling truly understood or connected to a therapist in the past, you may find this work different. I tend to be highly attuned to what people need in the moment and to offer support that meets you where you are. My hope is that therapy feels like a place where you don’t have to perform, explain yourself excessively, or have everything figured out - a place where you can slowly feel more at ease being fully yourself.
