Professional statement

Dr. Robert H. Reiner is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Executive Director of Behavioral Associates, a comprehensive mental health practice on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. He specializes in treating anxiety, phobias, and stress-related disorders using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), and QEEG assessment. Dr. Reiner works with individuals, couples, and families, using an integrative model that blends traditional psychotherapy with cutting-edge technology to help patients achieve lasting change.

Known for his direct, results-driven approach, Dr. Reiner personally meets with each new patient for an initial consultation to determine the best course of care. He conducts a thorough clinical assessment and may match the patient with one of the expert clinicians on staff. While therapy is the cornerstone of treatment, he prioritizes non-pharmacological interventions and reserves medication only when necessary. Psychiatric consultation is available in-house when appropriate.

For over four decades, Dr. Reiner has gained national recognition for his work in anxiety treatment—particularly in the use of technology to treat specific phobias like fear of flying. His expertise has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and on CNN and National Geographic. He is frequently called upon as a psychological consultant and expert witness in legal cases involving trauma and personality assessment.

Dr. Reiner received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Alabama. He completed his internship at Bellevue Hospital and served on the NYU Medical Center psychiatry faculty from 1980 to 2015. He is board certified in biofeedback and neurofeedback, teaches BCIA certification courses, and regularly presents on medication-free approaches and mental health technology.

Dr. Reiner offers both in-person and remote therapy sessions across New York State through Behavioral Associates.

Message to clients

When you begin working with me, our first step will be a comprehensive consultation where I’ll get to know your specific goals, challenges, and history. I take this initial meeting seriously—not just to understand your needs, but to ensure you’re matched with the most effective treatment plan. In some cases, I may recommend that you work with a clinician on my team, depending on your clinical presentation and preferences. Regardless of who provides your ongoing care, I remain actively involved in every case. We use a collaborative, team-based approach at Behavioral Associates, and I continue to oversee treatment progress.

My goal is not just to help you understand what you’re experiencing but to actively help you reduce your symptoms and regain a sense of control. I take a practical, results-oriented approach to therapy. While talk therapy is a core part of the process, I often integrate advanced tools like Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Virtual Reality Therapy, or QEEG brain mapping to target symptoms more directly. My goal is to help you reduce distress as efficiently and sustainably as possible, using methods that are grounded in research and tailored to you.

Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, trauma, a specific phobia, or chronic stress, I see therapy as an active collaboration. You’re not just here to talk, you’re here to get better. And I’m here to help guide that process with structure, clinical expertise, and a clear plan of action.

If you’re ready to work toward real, measurable change, I look forward to meeting with you.
