Professional statement

Robin Levick, LMFT, works with people who want more than quick fixes. His clients are looking to live and relate with depth and integrity in a world that often makes both difficult. Many are questioning the stories they’ve been told about success, relationships, and identity, and want to create lives that feel more authentic, connected, and sustainable.

Robin works with individuals and couples to untangle the patterns that keep them stuck. These may be habits, defenses, or survival strategies that once helped but now get in the way of intimacy and fulfillment. In couples therapy, he helps partners slow down enough to see what is really happening between them, and to find new ways of connecting. In individual work, he offers space to explore who you are, how your past and present connect, and how culture and systems shape your experience.

His approach is collaborative, relational, and grounded in somatic awareness. Drawing on contemporary relational psychoanalysis, interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, trauma theory, and sociocultural analysis, Robin tailors his work to each client’s needs. This may involve talking through a difficult memory, noticing how your body responds to a topic, or naming a dynamic in the moment.

Robin holds a master’s degree in Somatic Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and has experience in community-based work with youth, families, and individuals navigating systemic oppression. His practice is hybrid: he maintains an office in San Francisco for in-person sessions, and works remotely half the time, working with clients throughout California. He finds that even a few in-person meetings can strengthen and enrich teletherapy.

Outside the office, Robin has a deep love of the mountains and is learning to kayak class IV whitewater. At times he brings this spirit of adventure into his practice, and sometimes conducts his video sessions from remote campsites.

Message to clients

If you are fighting to feel alive and free, and if you value honesty, integrity, and deep connection, I want to work with you.

We live in a culture of relentless commodification that breeds numbness, dissociation, and disconnection. I work with people who are disaffected by this and looking for a therapist who understands that their discontent may in part be a sign of being awake and alive.

I will support you in developing deep self-awareness, strengthening your emotional resilience, and sharpening your communication skills so you can feel as empowered as possible

We cannot change the past, but we can heal old wounds by opening them and releasing what has been festering beneath the surface. In the process, we can see how those wounds have been shaping your perceptions in ways that don't serve you.

We cannot change the culture, but we can learn to navigate it with clarity and to seek out the pockets of community and beauty that make life worth living.

Love is ever-present, even when hidden. Therapy can help you recover your capacity to feel it, to trust it, and to live from it.

Specialties

Relationship issues - Relationships, in the end, are everything. I help my clients get their needs and desires met respectfully, skillfully, and ethically.

General - Diversity in my caseload - both in terms of presenting issues and identities - is something I value. If something about my profile speaks to you, don't hesitate to reach out, and we can discuss together if i'm the right person to help you. In initial consultations, I sometimes refer clients to other providers - either because a different approach or training might serve you better, or because a colleague comes to mind who I think you’d enjoy working with.

Ecological and climate grief and anxiety - Being in reality about the degradation of the biosphere is painful. I support individuals and groups who want to confront the truth of our situation without collapsing into despair, dread, misanthropy and nihilism. Inspired by Nate Hagans and Daniel Schmactenberger, I will help you keep your heart open and mind sharp, and to create resilience, community and connection to prepare for the difficult transition ahead.

Mind-body connection - The mind-body problem has been a central question in philosophy and spiritual traditions for thousands of years. In our time, the body is objectified, manipulated, commodified, and politicized. We are organisms with partial consciousness, and this is confusing. Attempts to escape or reject our bodies [ourselves] can lead to madness, as can feeling trapped in a body flooded with unpleasant emotion. Sensing, regulating, and accepting our bodies can increase vitality, equanimity, and connection.

Anger - Anger gets a bad rap. It allows us to defend, confront, protect. These are essential capabilities for an empowered existence. You may need help accessing and allowing your anger, or you may need help modulating it and transmuting it. I help clients find true empowerment by expanding their choices in the face of their anger, and learning to express it skillfully or self-regulate it as needed.

Startup Founders and Venture Capitalists - I work specifically with tech professionals who are working for the betterment of humanity and recognize that capitalism has serious flaws that are limiting humanity’s ability to face our current challenges. I can support you in navigating the ethical dilemmas and power dynamics that you will face working within the startup ecosystem, and help you stay in alignment with your mission and vision for your company.
