Professional statement

Dr. Steven Sohnle is a licensed Psychologist located in Somervile, NJ. For over twenty years he has worked with adults ranging from their teens to their nineties. He helps clients navigate the issues common in the academic and professional settings including pressure to perform and impostor syndrome. He helps professionals at all career and life stages to make important decisions, build meaningful relationships and adapt to transitions such as student-to-professional, staff member-to-manager, manager-to-executive, professional-to-retiree, marriage, divorce and relationship and career disappointments.

Highly experienced in multiple evidence-based approaches, Dr. Sohnle helps his clients with Process-Based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). He teaches clients about the subtle relationships between thoughts, feelings, and actions. Clients learn to identify and understand unhelpful thought patterns that can lead to frustration, anger, disappointment, or anxiety resulting in unhelpful behaviors such as procrastination, excessive substance use and withdrawing from relationships. Dr. Sohnle often incorporates elements of mindfulness into therapy to foster a moment-to-moment awareness which can be empowering and even life-changing.

Dr. Sohnle earned his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He is a board-certified clinical psychologist through the American Board of Professional Psychology (for which he is currently an examiner) and a certified cognitive behavior therapist through the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. He is listed on the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. He has directed numerous clinical programs at Rutgers University. He teaches and supervises graduate students in clinical psychology and serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Message to clients

You may know that you're an intelligent, capable, and maybe even accomplished person, and yet still feel inferior, "not good enough," or in some way deficient. You may feel like an impostor who has fooled everyone around you into thinking you're somehow "better" than you are. Over thousands of years, our brains have evolved to detect threats and motivate us to avoid them as well as to constantly compare ourselves to others. These traits have allowed humanity to survive, but ironically, they create a lot of suffering. I'll teach you to recognize how these "hard wired" tendencies work against us and how you can stop struggling with them and focus on building your life around what is truly important and meaningful to you - the things that will enhance your experience and satisfaction, so you use less of your time and energy avoiding those negative feelings. Contact me to set up a free fifteen-minute consultation. You can tell me about your situation, and we can discuss how therapy might help.
