Professional statement

Dr. Tom Wooldridge is a board-certified psychologist and psychoanalyst who works with adolescents, adults and couples seeking meaningful change. Many of his clients come to psychotherapy because they feel stuck in painful patterns, whether struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, or major life transitions. Dr. Wooldridge is also known for his work with eating disorders and body image concerns, and often sees individuals who have tried other treatments and are seeking a deeper, more lasting approach.

Dr. Wooldridge’s style is warm, engaged, and collaborative. He helps clients slow down and reflect on their internal experience, making sense of the patterns that shape their lives. His approach is depth-oriented, meaning he not only helps reduce distress but also works with clients to understand its roots, creating space for new choices and more authentic ways of living. He draws on psychoanalysis, contemporary psychodynamic approaches, and other integrative methods to tailor treatment to each individual or couple.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Wooldridge is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Golden Gate University. He has published extensively on eating disorders, including several books and numerous journal articles, and he is a sought-after speaker and consultant to treatment programs. His expertise in both clinical work and scholarship allows him to offer therapy that is both evidence-informed and deeply attuned to each client’s unique story.

Dr. Wooldridge provides secure telehealth sessions to individuals and couples anywhere in California and New York and also sees clients in person in his Berkeley office. He offers daytime and morning or afternoon appointments to accommodate clients’ schedules.

Message to clients

Starting therapy is a meaningful step, and my goal is to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and genuinely heard. You don’t have to have everything figured out before coming in. Many people start therapy feeling unsure about where to begin, and we can work together to clarify what matters most to you.

In our sessions, I hope you’ll feel invited to slow down and reflect on your experience in a way that’s hard to do alone. I see therapy as a collaborative process: I bring curiosity, compassion, and clinical expertise, and you bring your lived experience and willingness to explore. Together, we’ll look at what’s been keeping you stuck and open up new possibilities for living with greater freedom and authenticity.

My hope for you is that therapy not only helps you find relief from immediate struggles, but also gives you insights and tools that stay with you long after our work together ends.
