Tracy Vadakumchery, LMHC is an Indian American therapist who helps adult children of immigrants conquer cultural shame, guilt, and trauma. She treats anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and body-image related issues. She is no stranger to these issues herself and believes that cultural shame and trauma greatly impact South Asian Americans facing these conditions. She has been directly and indirectly called a "Bad Indian" and a "Bad Daughter" many times, and has now embraced her complicated identity.
Tracy ignored the "What will people think?!?" perspective and took the road less traveled with her career. She was one of four South Asian Americans to receive a Master's in Counseling Psychology in her cohort and worked in community mental health for four years before transitioning into private practice. These jobs really challenged Tracy's beliefs of what it means to be a "good" therapist and a "good" Indian. Through the help of her supervisors and her training, Tracy challenged herself, decreased her self-doubt, and became more confident even when it was tough. Now, she teaches Brown Americans the things she's learned along the way.
Tracy is a great fit for Brown women who are looking to unpack intergenerational trauma and who have tried Western therapy before but it didn't work. She specializes in trauma therapy like EMDR, ACT and CBT to help clients with anxiety, depression, OCD, and other mental health conditions. She loves going deeper with clients and can also be a validating sounding board to vent to. She provides both virtual sessions throughout New York, New Jersey, California, and Florida and in-person sessions in Manhattan. If you've ever thought, "I'm a bad daughter", or "I'm not doing enough", then she invites you to come have a cup of tea with her and book your call with her today!
Years of Experience: 9 years
Race & cultural identity - Many adult children of immigrants and women of color are expected to fit a box of what a "good" person of their identity "should" be. This is something that we unlearn in therapy, and we can relearn what it means to live a values-based life outside of what people expect of us.
Women's issues - Together, we'll unpack how "good girl" conditioning and cultural expectations about gender play a role in your life, your self-care, your ability to trust others, and your boundaries.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - Trauma isn't just what happened to you; it's also what happened to the generations that came before you. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is considered the gold standard for PTSD treatment. Together we'll process past traumatic memories, how they impact your current life, and how you'd like to respond to those triggers in the future.
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)
Self-esteem - When you come from a highly critical household, it makes a lot of sense that you'd be carrying the weight of other people's expectations. This can create a lot of guilt and shame in how you might show up in relationships. Together, we'll work on how to cultivate self-compassion and give yourself permission to try new things, even if those things aren't what people expect of you. You deserve to see the best in yourself.
Eating disorders & disordered eating - What would it mean to you if your body was considered the standard, instead of something unattainable? Sometimes it's not always about weight; it's about wanting control, choices, or autonomy in life. I believe it's not always about the symptom, it's about the root. Together we'll uncover the roles that control, shame, and disgust feel in your life.
I offer virtual tele-therapy to South Asian women in NY/NJ, California, and Florida who struggle with guilt, shame, perfectionism, and people-pleasing. Book to schedule your free intro call!
