It’s very normal to experience some level of distress in response, but most of the time this distress decreases in the days and weeks following the event. However, in the case of adjustment disorder, the distress is more intense and prolonged than what might be typically expected. Individuals with adjustment disorder often experience symptoms of depression or anxiety that impact daily life and persist for up to six months following the stressful event, life change, or transition.
Many people find that short-term participation in therapy can help relieve this distress. Adjustment disorders are one of the most commonly experienced mental health conditions, and a variety of therapeutic modalities exist to help people adjust. Common approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), where your life coach will help you learn coping strategies or more helpful ways of thinking about the stressful event, or interpersonal therapy (IPT), where your life coach will focus on relationships and social support.
