Professional statement

Dr. Newsom helps you break patterns that no longer serve you.

He helps clients shift out of survival mode, reconnect with their values, and create a life that feels purposeful again — not just endured. His clients have described him as, "steady, clarifying, and transformational."

Dr. Newsom is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York, New Jersey, and North Carolina, trained in some of the most rigorous clinical settings in the country, including a Harvard-affiliated predoctoral internship. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University, where he teaches, supervises clinicians, and directs the evidence-based clinical psychology programming for the New Jersey VA. Despite these accomplishments, his clients never find him intimidating, and often comment on his penchant for infusing everyday struggles with a dash of humor and relatability.

His work is grounded in evidence-based treatment, blending ACT, DBT, and CBT to help clients heal quickly and deeply. He specializes in:

Trauma + complex emotional experiences

Relationship conflict and communication breakdowns

Anxiety, depression, and chronic self-doubt

Questions of identity, meaning, and direction

Dr. Newsom is especially attuned to clients who are navigating intense relationships — with partners, families, friends, colleagues, or themselves. If you are in a moment of transition, reckoning, or reinvention, you’ll find a skilled guide in Dr. Newsom.

Dr. Newsom completed his Ph.D. at Marquette University, trained at The Medical College of Wisconsin and Harvard, and has held clinical positions at Columbia University and Rutgers. Outside the office, you might find him playing guitar, running, cycling, or laughing with his family — a reminder that healing is not just possible, but worth pursuing.

Message to clients

You don’t have to hold everything together by yourself.

If you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed, misunderstood, or like you’re just pushing through each day, therapy can give you relief—and a place to finally breathe.

I offer therapy that is calm, steady, honest, and effective - with a dash of humor.

No judgment. No pressure. Just real conversations, thoughtful guidance, and evidence-based strategies that help you understand what you’re feeling and move forward with more clarity, confidence, and ease.

In my work with clients, I combine your lived experience with my clinical expertise to create a relationship that actually helps things shift. Together, we slow down what feels chaotic, make sense of what hurts, and strengthen the parts of you that deserve to be seen, valued, and supported.

If you’re carrying trauma, stress, or emotions that feel heavy or tangled—I can help you make space for healing and connection, instead of just survival.
