Professional statement

Benjamin Carter, MHC-LP is a therapist who is passionate about supporting individuals as they heal from experiences of trauma, find meaning in navigating identity, and foster loving relationships. With experience in working alongside individuals navigating complex trauma, family and partner conflict, substance use, depression, and anxiety, Benjamin works to facilitate healing through an attuned, collaborative relationship.

Benjamin’s approach to work is gentle, focused, and relational, in which he prioritizes helping individuals to feel held, understood, and guided to make meaning in their experiences and relationships. He believes that this creates a path for clients to heal, and make change.

While completing his master’s training, Benjamin worked in a trauma institute setting, supporting adults and children as they navigate ongoing trauma, stressors, and complex relationships. With advanced training in Meditation and Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, AEDP, and Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples, Benjamin offers a wide set of clinical approaches to meet clients where they are, while infusing a relational-cultural lens that integrates identity, attachment, and client experience into his work.

Benjamin believes that people are resilient, and have the keys to change and heal in the context of an attuned and collaborative relationship. He believes that healing also comes from an integration of individual identity, culture, and spirituality, and takes an anti-racist and LGBTQ+ and trans-affirming and informed approach that prioritizes acceptance and belonging for all aspects of identity.

Message to clients

Hi, I’m Benjamin. I'm a queer-affirming, trauma-informed mental health counselor offering therapy across New York State. I help individuals who are feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or uncertain about who they are or what they need—especially those navigating identity, trauma, and relationships. Many of my clients are adults working through the impact of past trauma, anxiety, shame, or disconnection from themselves or others. Some come to therapy unsure of how to express their needs in relationships, or stuck in patterns that no longer feel right.

Others are exploring who they are, who they’ve been told to be, or who they want to become. If that resonates, you’re not alone—and you’re in the right place. My approach is relational, compassionate, and collaborative. I work from an integration of mindfulness with attachment-focused and trauma-informed therapies.

If you're curious about working together, I offer a free 15-minute consultation. I'd love to meet with you.

Therapist's note

I practice Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), meaning I treat your relationship as the client. Health insurance companies operate on a medical model; to cover therapy, they require me to diagnose one partner with a psychiatric disorder (like anxiety or depression) to prove the treatment is medically necessary. Because my focus is on resolving relationship distress rather than treating an individual's illness, my couples therapy does not meet insurance criteria for medical necessity. Therefore, I offer this service strictly on a private-pay basis.
