Professional statement

Charlene Collibee, PhD s a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Rhode Island with specialized training in supporting college and graduate students, couples, and parents. Life transitions, including attending college, navigating graduate school, raising children, or building strong partnerships, can be deeply rewarding but also overwhelming. Balancing multiple demands often collides with questions about identity, purpose, relationships, and expectations. Therapy provides a supportive space to make sense of these experiences, manage stress, and strengthen your connections with others.

Many of us carry the weight of past experiences whether from family, childhood, or previous relationships into their current lives without realizing it. Dr. Collibee helps clients understand and break these patterns using research-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), the Gottman Method, and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). These interventions are designed to reduce anxiety and depression, improve communication, and foster healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Research consistently shows that as relationships improve mental health improves too. When we feel fulfilled in our relationships we display greater resilience, less anxiety, and we better engage in what matters most.

Dr. Collibee is a professor of psychology and runs The Relationships Lab in Providence. She earned her PhD from the University of Denver and completed postdoctoral training at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Her clinical and research expertise on interpersonal relationships has been featured in outlets such as NPR and The Times, and she has published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles about relationships across the lifespan.

Message to clients

Our relationships can be both our greatest source of stress and our greatest source of joy. I specialize in working with college and graduate students, couples of all ages and types, and new parents. Whether you’re navigating the pressures of school, balancing the demands of parenting, or wanting to strengthen your relationship, therapy offers a space to better understand yourself, build on your natural strengths, and move toward your goals. My academic research focuses on how relationships and past experiences shape our mental health across the lifespan, allowing me to bring cutting-edge, research-informed strategies directly into therapy.

For individual therapy, we begin with an initial session to better understand your concerns, background, and goals. From there, we create a personalized plan for therapy—deciding together what to focus on, how progress will be measured, and the pace of sessions (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.). Throughout treatment, I use research-based assessments to track your progress and help you move toward your best self.

For couples’ therapy and parenting, both partners attend sessions together to work on specific challenges in the relationship. Common goals include improving communication, intimacy, trust, and working collaboratively. My approach is direct, non-judgmental, and non-blaming. Research shows that each partner brings important parts of themselves into the relationship, and together we can uncover the patterns shaping your dynamic. If you prefer to focus on relationship concerns without your partner present, individual therapy can also provide space to strengthen your connections on your own.

No matter where you are, you belong here.
