Professional statement

Deirdre Murphy-Torres has been devoted to the field of social work over the last 25 years specializing in working with youth, young adults and families in schools, group homes, community centers or sports fields. Some of her favorite jobs were supporting Teen Moms and creating prevention programs for their siblings, or developing sports and leadership programs for youth in San Francisco Mission district.

She honed in her interest in counseling over the last 10-15 years focusing on supporting people of all ages. Through her passion for sports and then eventually yoga, she loves to connect the mind and body as a way to calm anxiety or develop more tools to manage ADHD symptoms. Mindfulness, Somatic work or walking in nature can also be very healing to support trauma, recover from substance abuse or rediscover values and passions that have been inhibited by fear.

Deirdre deeply appreciates that therapy can be uncomfortable and require hard work, so laughter and respecting a client's pace can make a big difference to help someone commit to their personal growth.

Message to clients

People often begin therapy when courage kicks in and helps fear move aside. You may be recognizing something needs to change, or your life isn't flowing the way you know it can, but you're not sure what is keeping you stuck. Deep down, a wise part of you knows, but you may need support with clarity, direction, healing, and tools to move forward.

It is truly inspiring to witness a client eventually catch a shame spiral and then use tools to practice self acceptance with curiosity and kindness. Understanding these “parts” of ourselves can help the younger or more vulnerable parts finally feel seen, supported, and able to let go.

I also incorporate a somatic approach, recognizing that our bodies often hold onto old experiences we may not consciously remember. By noticing sensations like tension, nausea, or anxiety, we begin responding to those signals with care, much like an attuned parent tending to a child who has just fallen off a bike. When we acknowledge and validate those old feelings, we can begin to rewrite the story our nervous system learned long ago, creating more space for resilience, self-trust, and growth.
